Experience Southern Hospitality at its Finest at This Historic Charleston Getaway

There’s a reason Charleston, South Carolina, finds itself at the top of countless destination guides each year. Known and loved for its history, architecture, and Southern hospitality, this city has a unique charm that can be felt on every block. One neighborhood in particular, known as Cannonborough Elliotborough, captures the essence of Charleston’s vibrant spirit and historic allure. Tucked away in this district is 86 Cannon, a luxury boutique inn that showcases the city’s special blend of history and sophistication. At 86 Cannon, guests can experience the best of Charleston’s past and present.

Once a collection of four historic residences dating back to the 1860s, this inn was thoughtfully transformed into a luxurious 10-key property. Guided by the vision of owners Lori and Marion Hawkins, the homes underwent extensive top-to-bottom restorations, while preserving historic aspects and incorporating modern touches. Authentic architectural details, like original hardwood floors and slate roofing, were left in place, keeping a connection to the property’s past. Today, 86 Cannon is completely up to date and features 10 bespoke rooms and suites, piazzas and porches, a garden courtyard, and a zero-edge saltwater pool. Not to mention, the property is exclusively adults-only, meaning it’s a (very) quiet and serene escape.

With 10 distinct rooms, each one is as lovely as the next. The accommodation options include the Loft King (a cozy room at the top of the house that features exposed beams and brickwork as well as views of the neighborhood), the Grand King (which has hand-stenciled walls, high ceilings, a fireplace, heartwood floors, and a king-size four-poster bed), the Garden Suites (complete with spacious sitting rooms that have wet-bars as well as large, ensuite bathrooms with floor-to-ceiling marble showers), and–our personal favorite–the Bungalow Suite (which is essentially a chic pool house located on the second floor of the pastel pink stucco pool bungalow, which has a double set of French doors that lead to a wrought iron balcony that overlooks the pool). In addition to the rooms and suites, 86 Cannon has shared spaces guests can enjoy, including the Cafe (where breakfast and happy hour are served), the Library, and the Salon.

As for the amenities, the hotel has luxury sheets from the Italian brand Frette, curated concierge services, complimentary use of Linus bicycles, Nespresso coffee machines, Boca Terry bathrobes and slippers, Malin + Goetz bath amenities, sound machines, and Drybar hair dryers. The best perk, however, is the complimentary food offerings. Upon arrival, guests are welcomed with a glass of champagne, and each evening, turndown service includes delectable chocolate truffles. In the morning, a European breakfast is set up in the main house and includes a selection of homemade and locally sourced items such as fruit juices, yogurts, cheese, and bread. As for the best part? Happy hour is every night from 5 to 6 pm and includes complimentary wine and cheese pairings. The owners select a variety of wines, including red, white, rosé, and even orange options. With foodies in mind, the cheese boards have a lovely assortment of cheeses, breads, and nuts. Additionally, guests have access to ‘honor bars’ located in the pool house and Library, where they can enjoy cold beers, wines, and seltzers whenever they please.

One of the standout features of 86 Cannon is its design and decor, curated by B. Berry Interiors. The property has a modern take on traditional Charleston elegance by blending mid-century finishes with classic French elements. There’s an overall ambiance of updated Southern luxury (read: sleek decor and luxe amenities), meaning guests still feel like they’re experiencing Charleston without being stuck in the past. With a balance between fresh design and historic authenticity, 86 Cannon offers guests the best of both worlds–and so much more.
