3 Historical Hotels in the U.S.

Compared to Europe and the Middle East, architecture in the United States is not nearly as old or ancient. With that said, there are a sweeping variety of stunning historical hotels — for US standards — from the last 200-300 years. Below, we’ve rounded up three historical hotels in the U.S. with rich pasts👇

1️⃣ The perfect respite from the hustle n’ bustle of New York City, Mohonk Mountain House (@mohonkmountainhouse) is a retreat 90-miles north of Manhattan. The Victorian castle-style resort is surrounded by 40,000 acres of pristine forest, where it stands out amongst towering trees and a glistening lake. The hotel’s history starts in 1869, when Albert Smiley purchased a ten-room in on Lake Mohonk. Since then — still family-owned, six generations later — it has sequentially expanded into its main function today, a grand upstate New York hotel equipped with farm-to-table dining, hiking trails, tennis courts, golfing, and horseback riding.

2️⃣ Often regarded as the “Pink Palace of the Pacific,” the Royal Hawaiian (@royal_hawaiian) has been welcoming guests to its prime Waikiki Beach location since its opening in 1927. Significantly influenced by screen star Rudolph Valentino and architecture trends at the time, the hotel’s coral-pink exterior and Spanish-Moorish style have made it a Hawaiian icon. Following Pearl Harbor, the Navy recreation and morale office leased The Royal Hawaiian, transforming the resort into a major rest and relaxation center for the Navy personnel. Renovated several times throughout the years, beachfront restaurant, Azure, and the rejuvenating, Abhasa Waikiki Spa, are not to miss — we love the Lomi Lomi treatment, an ancestral Hawaiian-inspired massage.

3️⃣ Situated in Charleston, South Carolina, Zero George Street (@zerogeorgest) is a boutique hotel that exudes storied, Southern luxury. The 1804-built hotel is comprised of 16 guestrooms homed in three breathtaking historic residences and two brick carriage houses, all which share a lush garden courtyard space. Epicureans will revel when tasting dishes at Zero Restaurant + Bar, where Chef Vinson Petrillo cooks up a dishes with seasonal local ingredients, in a tiny professional kitchen.
