This Sleek Luxury Hotel in the Heart of Mayfair Is an Art-Lover’s Dream

Busy streets, quaint shops, and tree-lined parks lead the way to 45 Park Lane. From the airport, the drive takes under an hour, with scenes of Kensington, Knightsbridge, and Belgravia blurring by. In the distance, the glow of 45 Park Lane’s golden façade comes into view–its sleek, tinted windows reflecting the glimmer of the afternoon sun. A British flag waves proudly from the top of the building, marking its residence in the coveted Mayfair area.

True to its name and address, 45 Park Lane is a reflection of the neighborhood’s prestige and charm. A stone’s throw from Hyde Park and just a few blocks away from some of London’s most iconic landmarks, including Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square, this 46-key hotel holds its ground as one of the city’s most desired stays.

Before becoming a luxury hotel, 45 Park Lane had a storied past, as many buildings in London do. Originally designed by famed Bauhaus architect Walter Gropius as an office building, the address soon transformed into The Playboy Club in the 1960s. Known for its glamour, it became a discreet retreat for London’s rich and famous, earning the nickname ‘the hutch on the park’ from locals. A hot spot where visitors graced each floor at all hours, the Club was an iconic part of the city’s social scene until it closed in 1982.

After the Club left, it (fittingly) became an ultra-luxurious residence for Prince Jefri, the Sultan of Brunei’s younger ‘playboy’ brother, in the 1990s. Finally, in 2011, the building transformed into what it is today–an architectural landmark filled with art, culture, and 46 rooms designed for the discerning traveler.

What really makes this building stand out—aside from its prime location—is its bold façade, featuring distinctive horizontal ‘fins’ that wrap around the building’s curves. These fins guide the eye across the structure and lead straight to the entrance. Once inside the revolving doors, it’s clear that 45 Park Lane’s interior is just as impressive as its exterior. Designed by architect, curator, and artist Thierry Despont, the space feels more like a private residence than a hotel. With an Art Deco touch, Despont filled the hotel with a constantly evolving collection of artwork by contemporary British artists. In addition to permanent pieces by big names like Damien Hirst and Sir Peter Blake, the hotel regularly showcases local artists with exhibitions featuring everything from collages and photography to sculptures and prints.

Upstairs, guests can find 35 rooms and 11 suites, each offering a spacious and comfortable retreat. Despite the building’s size, the relatively small number of rooms means each one is generously sized, providing plenty of room to relax. The smallest rooms start over 380 square feet, while the Penthouse Suite is truly something special, spanning more than 1,800 square feet and featuring a wraparound terrace with panoramic views of the London skyline. Whether you’re staying in a room or suite, expect plush, king-size beds, glass-enclosed showers with multiple heads (rainfall included), soaking tubs, and sweeping views of Hyde Park. To top it off, a personal host is assigned to each room, serving as a butler, concierge, and wealth of information all rolled into one, ensuring your stay is nothing short of exceptional.

While the accommodations are outright impressive, the dining options are equally worthy of praise. 45 Park Lane is home to the ultra-stylish CUT, Wolfgang Puck’s first European restaurant, where Executive Chef Elliott Grover curates a rotating menu that offers a sophisticated twist on the American steakhouse. Twinkling, intricate lighting fixtures hang from the high ceilings, while works by Damien Hirst line then dark-wood walls. Sleek light sculptures lead the way up a narrow flight of black stairs to BAR 45–a hideaway with a vibrant menu of handcrafted cocktails, ‘Rough CUTs’ (Wolfgang Puck’s renowned signature cocktails), and the must-order vintage Negronis. The ambiance is equal parts lively and sexy, with cozy seating areas, a polished bar, and a carefully curated selection of moody art.

One of the most unique features of 45 Park Lane happens to be one of the most discreet. Sushi Kanesaka, a Michelin-starred dining experience tucked behind a hidden doorway, is led by Shinji Kanesaka–a master of traditional Edomae sushi. This intimate restaurant boasts only nine seats, making it exceptionally exclusive. Impressively, Sushi Kanesaka earned its first Michelin star just seven months after opening, a testament to its incredible quality. Without a doubt, a meal here will be one to remember.
