This 5-Star Resort in the Maldives Pairs Luxury with Outdoor Adventures

The Maldives, a country and archipelagic state in the Indian Ocean is comprised of 1,192 islands that span across the equator. So, what makes Milaidhoo, a small island resort tucked away in the Baa Atoll, worth visiting? The answer lies in its laid-back yet unparalleled luxury experience.

Accessible by a scenic 30-minute seaplane ride from Malé International Airport, Milaidhoo is set on a private island surrounded by bright, turquoise waters, vibrant coral reefs, and powdery white sand beaches. Opened in November of 2016, this five-star stay has everything a traveler could dream of, from luxe villas and gourmet dining options to exciting water activities and genuine service.

In terms of accommodations, Milaidhoo has a total of fifty spacious villas. Thirty of these are Water Villas, which are quintessential to the Maldives. They’re perched on stilts over the ocean and feature large sun decks, freshwater infinity pools, Maldivian-style swing couches, sun loungers, and shaded daybeds. Each deck has steps that lead directly into the crystal-clear waters of the lagoon, providing easy access to nearby coral reefs. Every villa’s interior, inspired by Maldivian heritage, has custom-made furnishings as well as bathrooms with bathtubs and rain showers that have ocean views. Plus, guests can find a king-size bed facing the ocean, a concealed flat-screen TV, a wine chiller, and individually controlled air-conditioning.

The Beach Villas are secluded havens located on the sand, surrounded by palm trees and tropical greenery. Inside, each room has the same luxe amenities as the Water Villas, with the addition of gorgeous beach views. The patios, made more secluded by lush vegetation, feature private freshwater infinity pools, daybeds and swinging chairs, sun loungers, shady umbrellas, and outdoor rainfall showers. Plus, these villas (of course) have direct access to the beach.

The coveted stay here is the Ocean Residence, a massive two-bedroom home that can fit up to six guests. Guests staying here have access to a private indoor gym, a huge sundeck with multiple sun loungers, and a private freshwater infinity pool with direct lagoon access. Plus, this stay comes with a personal, dedicated chef, a bespoke three-hour cruise on a luxury boat, and a private dinner on the beach.

Oh, and did we mention each villa at Milaidhoo has a dedicated 24-hour island host that works to make each stay as seamless and relaxing as possible? Yes, that, too.

Speaking of relaxing, the spa, which is set overwater, was made for those who want to prioritize their wellbeing. The menu features a curated selection of treatments inspired by Maldivian traditions, including massages, body scrubs, facials, and holistic therapies. Each treatment is tailored to individual needs, using natural, organic products. In addition to its treatment rooms, the spa features a relaxation area where guests can unwind before or after their treatments. What’s more, Milaidhoo offers complimentary yoga and meditation sessions each morning in the overwater pavilion.

With three restaurants and two bars, guests have the perfect amount of options when it comes to dining. The signature restaurant, The Shoreline Grill, has a mouthwatering selection of seafood, meat, and more. Guests can either dine outside in private beach pavilions or inside with a view of the show kitchens. Those feeling adventurous can try the “teppanyaki” table, where the chef will ask what they’re in the mood for and cook accordingly.

Ba’theli Lounge and Restaurant, on the other hand, is the world’s only restaurant set on a boat in a lagoon. Guests can dine under the stars on the deck or enjoy air-conditioned indoor seating with glass floors offering views of the sea below. The menu, featuring seafood and traditional Maldivian flavors, changes regularly depending on what’s in season. As for sunset here? It’s almost impossible to beat.

Additionally, Ocean Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This casually comfortable spot offers international dishes that highlight fresh, tropical ingredients. Dine outside at a table with views of the ocean, inside at a cozy spot with soft sand under your feet, or by the pool on a comfortable lounger. In terms of drinks, we recommend the Cosmopolitan and Pool Party Punch.

For adventurous travelers, Milaidhoo has an array of activities designed to immerse guests in the great outdoors. Water enthusiasts can enjoy excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities within the Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve known for its marine life, including coral reefs, manta rays, and whale sharks. Guests can also paddleboard, kayak, and go on guided fishing trips that offer a glimpse into traditional Maldivian fishing practices. Those who like the finer things in life can sail away to their own private deserted sandbank, where the chefs make a fresh picnic feast. Plus, visitors can follow dolphins at sunset with champagne and canapes on board one of the resort’s luxury boats or stargaze in the middle of the sea.
