I’ll admit it—I couldn’t resist putting on Billy Joel’s legendary song Vienna as I wandered through the aristocratic streets of Austria’s capital. And as I strolled, I couldn’t help but wonder: Had Vienna actually been waiting for me? Of course, the lyrics don’t exactly mean that. Still, the song felt like the perfect soundtrack as I stepped out of my stylish pink palatial stay, the Imperial Riding School, Autograph Collection, ready to explore this regal city.
But perhaps the best part about this hotel is that you don’t even have to step outside to immerse yourself in Vienna’s rich history. Once a 19th-century military equestrian school for the Hungarian and Austrian Empire’s army before World War I, the property seamlessly weaves its storied past into its design. Original stone pillars from the school remain intact, lining the entryway as you walk through the grand foyer to check-in. Above, modern light fixtures cast an inviting glow—but their shapes are far from arbitrary. Many installations subtly nod to horse hooves, rider backpacks, and horse manes, with textured, hair-covered lamps. Playing further into its former life, rounded red velvet couches fill the lobby lounge, echoing the curves of racetracks and Vienna’s royal heritage—where red symbolized wealth and power during the Habsburg Dynasty.
The 342-key property is anything but a typical megaresort. Inside these stylish stables (yes, I’m leaning into the horse jargon—it fits), each space exudes noble sophistication, inspired by the hotel’s equestrian roots and its founder, Emperor Franz Joseph I. From the entry-level Deluxe King Room to the crown jewel Empress Suite, every accommodation sports a separate living area outfitted with plush, sage green upholstery, glossy coffee tables, and rider-inspired artworks arranged in a chic gallery wall. Floral patterns blend seamlessly with a garden-like palette of browns, reds, and rose pinks, echoing the property’s lush outdoor spaces (more on that later). In the bathrooms, elegant marble sinks set the stage for Saint Charles Apothecary soaps and lotions, adding their delicate herbal scent to the refined ambiance.
Before trotting around Vienna, start your day with a refreshing dip in the hotel’s serene indoor pool, tucked below the ground floor. Sumptuous lounge chairs and cozy concave cabanas invite you to unwind post-swim. For those looking to break a sweat, the state-of-the-art gym is stocked with high-tech fitness equipment, while the expansive yoga studio offers a tranquil space for bodyweight training—or even hosting your own session. A visit to the sauna or steam room rounds out the experience, leaving you relaxed and ready to explore the nearby Landstraße district and beyond.
Vienna is renowned for its café culture, and the Imperial Riding School fully embraces this tradition with its charming grab-and-go spot, Cameo. Flanked by lush foliage and luxe seating, it invites you to order a Viennese coffee or a refreshing peppermint tea, then unwind by the cozy fireplace. Even the tea presentation is elevated, arriving in a glass pot with crystalized white and brown sugar cubes.
After a day of sightseeing, head to the stylish 60-seat cocktail bar, Farrier, for a pre-dinner drink. On cooler days, try their signature Limoncello spritz or the Imperial Dirndl—an organic aperitif made from cornelian cherries produced by Café Central in Vienna. Then, make your way to Elstar, the moody restaurant where traditional Viennese schnitzel is a must. Locally sourced ingredients shine in dishes like beetroot tartare, topped with vegan crème fraîche and innovative beetroot caviar. Pair it with roasted tomato cream soup with mini grilled cheese cubes—perfect for dipping or pouring the soup over for an indulgent experience.
During the warm summer months, both guests and locals flock to Elstar’s Garden & Orchard, tucked away behind the hotel’s stately façade. Whether it’s post-work barbecues or afternoon picnics amid the lush greenery, you can enjoy dishes from the restaurant and bar’s indoor menu while basking in the fresh air and serene surroundings.
I left Vienna longing for more, and from my posh base at the Imperial Riding School, Autograph Collection, I felt a deeper connection to this city in ways I never expected.
