Although the Maldives is now one of the most coveted bucket list destinations in the world, it was largely a hidden gem merely 50 years ago. In the early 1970s, this archipelagic country in the north-central Indian Ocean was relatively isolated and vastly undeveloped, home to small clusters of fishermen living on some of the islands. And, while that has undeniably changed today, some things have stayed the same–particularly at Baros Maldives.
Baros, a locally-owned luxury resort, was the third resort to open in the Maldives. In 1973, this hotel–once an operational coconut plantation–opened its doors to visitors across the globe. Since then, this property has worked to preserve the island’s history, natural beauty, and charm.
As for the hotel itself, it’s home to 75 villas. These villas, located both above blue lagoons and in the lush jungles, feature Maldivian architecture with rugged, coconut-thatch roofing, earthy, teak wood accents, and warm, neutral color palettes. The Water Pool Villas and Pool Villas are sanctuaries of pure seclusion, made with the utmost privacy and tranquility in mind. The Water Pool Villas feature exactly what their name entails–gorgeous views of the water as well as private infinity pools. Additionally, they have spacious wooden decks with lounge chairs, roomy cabanas, and umbrellas. The best part? There’s direct access to the baby blue lagoon as well as outdoor showers.
The Pool Villas, on the other hand, are located on the eastern shore of the island. They’re tucked within tangles of vegetation and have sandy paths that lead to the white sand beach. These, too, have private infinity swimming pools and outdoor verandas with comfortable places to relax.
For those who want something more, they can upgrade to the Baros Suites, the Deluxe Beach Villas, the Baros Residence, or the Baros Two-Bedroom Beach Residence. No matter which stay is preferred, each room at Baros has a dedicated villa host that can be reached at any hour of the day.
In terms of dining, the island has three unique restaurants and two bars. Lime Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with delicious menus featuring international cuisine. Guests who like big breakfasts can come here for an indulgent buffet complete with a vast selection of juices, fresh seafood, and Maldivian specialties. Cayenne Grill, perched over the lagoon, has a mouthwatering dinner menu with a selection of meat, fish, and so much more. For dessert, be sure to try the Messy Chocolate Delight, which is a delectable concoction of rosemary ice cream, chocolate meringue, and hazelnut crust. The ultimate fine dining experience can be had at The Lighthouse Restaurant, which sits above the lagoon and has a towering white sail. Here, guests can sit under the stars while enjoying everything from local seafood and mouthwatering wagyu to hearty pasta and rich desserts. Pair dinner with wine suggestions from the resident sommelier, and this meal will be hard to beat.
The Serenity Spa is another feature at Baros that makes this hotel truly special. Covered by trees, this hideaway is ideal for those who want to indulge in themselves. Each of the four private spa suites has a relaxation area outside with a rainfall shower, a bathtub in a tropical garden, and a steam room. Plus, the spa boasts a manicure and pedicure suite, an air-conditioned yoga pavilion, and some of the best masseuses we’ve ever encountered.
On the flip side, Baros also has a wide array of excursions and activities designed to immerse guests in all the island has to offer. For those looking to explore the underwater world, the resort has exceptional snorkeling and diving opportunities, which makes sense as it has one of the largest house reefs in the Maldives. Underwater, guests swim with all kinds of marine life, including colorful fish, sharks, and turtles. Baros also offers sunset cruises on a Nooma boat, or Maldivian dhoni, which can be coupled with champagne and some of the most incredible sunsets in the world.
