More Than Just Arabica Beans: A Guide to NYC’s Best Coffee Experiences

In a city that never sleeps, our coffee game has to be strong. Coffee shops here are a dime in a dozen: work-friendly, Korean-inspired cafes, old-school Italian cafes, holistic cafes, grab-in-go, we have them all. But for the coffee shops looking to put on multiple faces, these are rare. These storefronts have a specialty besides serving up New York its caffeine fix; think really modern and chic interiors or fragrances even! That being said, these brands prove coffee doesn’t just have to be a morning routine. These coffee shops are making a name for themselves past the Arabica coffee beans.

Remi Flowers & Coffee (Midtown East)

Located in Midtown East, Remi Flowers is the shop to visit for a hand-tie bouquet, latte, and pastries. Greeted with a vast amount of flowers when you walk in, it’s a cute option if you’re looking for a cafe more than just a coffee shop. Plus, the menu does feature a couple of flower-themed drinks available to order.

Elorea (Soho)

Down in Soho, the Korean fragrance brand, Elorea presents visitors as a haven for their olfactory system. Each collection showcased pays homage to Korean heritage and traditions. In their newest collection, Timeless Legacy, pays tribute to Korea’s cherished traditions and the artisans who have tirelessly preserved aspects of cultural fashion, historical architecture, time-honored customs, and culinary rituals. Elorea uses unique notes closely related to Korea like lotus leaves, Korean pine, and jinjang (aged soy sauce) – notes not usually found on the fragrance counter.

In the flagship store, the brand handcrafts unique drinks to enhance the experience. Their signature coffee drinks include sweet corn, black sesame, strawberry, and pineberry syrup. (Don’t knock it until you try it.)

Conwell Coffee Hall (Financial District)

Deep down the Financial District is Conwell Coffee Hall, downtown’s coolest coffee shop. Formerly a bank lobby, this caffeine hub is also a part of “Life and Trust” a theatrical production from Emursive Productions. Find exclusive blends like the Skyscraper Medium Roast and The Vault Dark Roast made only for Conwell Coffee Hall.

Dae (Carroll Garden, Brooklyn)

The glassware and silverware game is strong at Dae. If you’re a person who spends hours looking at chic silverware, Dae is a must-stop. Enjoy their olive oil cakes or Earl Grey cakes as you sip on lattes and teas during the day. By night, Dae turns into a cozy dining bar serving up drinks and tapas.

Thuma (Soho)

As you search for the chicest nightstand the city has to offer, you may find yourself walking into Thuma. To show off their interior design skills, the brand Wooster St. location created the Lounge, filled with pieces from the brand, original artwork from partner Uprise Art, and a cafe serving up seasonal refreshments alongside a caffeine fix.

As You Like (Williamsburg, Brooklyn)

This cafe whips up coffee and matcha fresh, accompanied by a seasonal menu. Plus, As You Like serves as a storefront for a selection of ceramics made by local artists. This cafe is the poster child of creativity by offering specialty menus and collaborating with small businesses to amplify local talents. This past month they’re whipping up a Maple Kinako Latte, a sweet, nutty latte to honor autumn, and recently hosted an Onigiri workshop. Working with Yellow Peril Books, they’ve been highlighting books by Asian authors, like The Full Moon Coffee Shop, written by Mai Mochizuki.

Ralph’s Coffee (Midtown)

An obvious feature, but it must be mentioned. With many locations in New York, the must-visit would have to be the Madison Ave Flagship store. After browsing the first floor for all your elevated essentials from sweaters to pants, head up to the second floor to Ralph’s Coffee and relax with a cappuccino.
