Unwind in Style at Cape of Senses, Lake Garda’s Most Peaceful Retreat

A handful of hotels have taken my breath away, but only a few have left me speechless. Cape of Senses was one of them. The moment I entered the silent glass doors into the sleek, neutral-toned lobby, the outside world was quickly forgotten. The unobstructed (and absolutely jaw-dropping) view of Lake Garda stretched along the horizon as olive trees gently swayed in the breeze. An almost indescribable sense of peace washed over me—a feeling that stayed during my entire visit.

Simply put, Cape of Senses is a lakeside retreat that does things differently. It’s luxurious without being flashy, modern yet completely in tune with nature. The design was made to bring the outside world in, and that’s seen in every detail from the warm, earthy tones to the floor-to-ceiling windows that keep the focus on the lake’s shimmering waters.

The hotel’s location is a big part of what makes it so special. Lake Garda, the biggest lake in Italy (and in my opinion, one of the most underrated), is as diverse as it is deep. The southern shores are dotted with vineyards, olive groves, and small towns, while the north is much more dramatic, with cliffs that plunge straight into the water. Drive along the edge, and it’s a mix of medieval castles, citrus orchards, and colorful villages, each one somehow more charming than the last. (Be sure to visit the town of Sirmione– it’s worth the journey.) Despite the ferries, sailboats, and fast Fiats zipping by, the area still has a relaxing atmosphere. Picture a scene straight out of a classic Italian film like the 1954 Senso.

As for the hotel’s actual location, it’s tucked away in the hills above the water with uninterrupted views that’ll make you want to steal a glance every chance you get. To get to Cape of Senses, it’s just a short drive up from the town of Torri del Benaco. The journey to the top is an experience in itself, complete with glimpses of private homes tucked behind long driveways, large olive farms, and quaint bed and breakfasts. As you arrive at the top, Cape of Senses can be spotted behind a large gate, making every arrival feel exclusive. Once through the gate, it’s like entering a private retreat—quiet, peaceful, and undeniably luxurious. I can only imagine this is exactly how the Margesin family, who owns the hotel, must have felt when they stumbled upon an abandoned olive grove after 20 years of searching for the perfect spot.

Inside, the rooms—or rather, the suites—are the stars of the show. They’re nothing short of lavish, thanks to a blend of comfort, style, and stunning views. Each one features massive sliding doors that open onto private terraces, beds as plush as clouds, and spacious bathrooms with rainfall showers stocked with local, Italian-made amenities. If you’re particular about pillows, you’re in luck—a pillow menu is available to ensure every night is a dream. Outside, cozy sofas and tables with chairs are the best places to bask in the sunshine or enjoy a slow breakfast.

For ultimate relaxation, the 21,000 square-foot Senses Spa is not to be missed. It embraces a holistic concept, with everything from secluded treatment rooms and relaxation spaces to saunas, steam rooms,  fitness areas, and even a spa library. There’s also a yoga platform outside that’s home to workout classes and meditation sessions.

As for the pools, they’re almost too good to be true, with views to match. The half-indoor, half-outdoor infinity pool feels like a natural extension of the lake itself, but with the added benefit of being much warmer. Then there’s the sports pool, which is a refreshing contrast—cooler and perfect for a brisk morning swim or a workout.

When it comes to dining, Cape of Senses’ two restaurants do not disappoint. Al Tramonto takes a refined approach, serving upscale Mediterranean dishes prepared by Chef Francesco Pavan. For a more laid-back meal, Osteria La Pergola offers classic Italian bites for lunch, with the option to sit inside or on the terrace. The lobby bar is also a worthy stop, thanks to the specially-made Sunset Spritz–a negroni-like cocktail inspired by the vibrant hues of Lake Garda’s picture-perfect sunsets.

As for the cherry on top? Two bright red Vespas available for rent, always ready to be taken for a spin—matching helmets included, of course. Whether it’s an early morning by the pool, an afternoon strolling through olive groves, or a sunset toast with a perfectly crafted spritz, trust me when I say that any moment at Cape of Senses has the power to leave you speechless.
