What was once Detroit’s fire department headquarters has now become a monument of hospitality in the heart of Motor City. The Detroit Foundation Hotel, a love letter to the city it calls home, has quickly cemented itself as the standard of accessible luxury in the ever-evolving town; it’s the ideal setting for visitors and locals to find some respite.
The Foundation understands that first impressions matter and, from the very beginning, seeks to impress. The hotel’s facade pays homage to its roots as a firehouse—bright red doorways under stone archways look ready to send fire brigades to the rescue, but when they’re thrown open (as they often are), they instead serve as windows to the merriment within.
The hotel’s lobby is the opposite of claustrophobic—soaring ceilings and an open concept immediately give guests a feeling of light and levity, compounded by the enormous dining room immediately to the right of check-in.
That enormous dining room is none other than the hotel’s on-site food and beverage concept, The Apparatus Room. With enormous windows and creative lighting fixtures, this communal space is constantly bathed in light, providing the perfect backdrop to enjoy a meal or a meeting. While plenty of intimate seating options exist for a one-on-one lunch or dinner, the long leather booths support a sense of community and interaction—even amongst strangers.
The same attention to detail and design is present across the rest of the hotel—exposed brick and custom wallpaper collages (whose imagery depicts early-to-mid 20th-century Detroit) are present throughout, as are remarkably high ceilings that make guest rooms feel instantly spacious and roomy. All 100 hotel guestrooms and suites feature a locally crafted headboard by Detroit Salvage, leveraging repurposed car hood materials and paints from automotive factories.
If you can, spring for the Commissioner’s Suite, a large room clearly built for entertaining. Previously the office of the city’s Fire Commissioner, the expansive suite features a card table, pool table, and comfortable seating area that feels homey and luxurious. We also love the Detroit-inspired literature and custom local artwork found in this suite and rooms throughout the hotel.
While there’s plenty to explore in the Motor City, it’s worth starting in the hotel with its plentiful amenities. For example, there’s the Foundation Studio, the first podcast studio in a hotel, which can accommodate 120 people. On the fourth floor, you’ll find the hotel’s rotating art exhibit, always featuring works from eight local artists who seek to encapsulate the spirit of their city. Work from local artists is perennially on display throughout the property. A partnership with Lincoln vehicles and house bikes further encourages folks to get out and about and become better acquainted with downtown Detroit.
There are plenty of nearby dining options, but the Apparatus Room offers more than its fair share of spectacular menu items from Executive Chef Chef Rece Hogerheide, a native Michigander himself. Don’t miss the classic Smoked Whitefish Dip to start, and then indulge in one of the chef’s signature pasta, like the garganelli with shelling peas, fava beans, pea puree, and ricotta.
Whether you’re experiencing Detroit for the first time or back for a familiar visit, a stay at the Detroit Foundation Hotel is sure to (re)ignite your love for the city.
