Discover This Quaint Minnesota Hotel Built Into Cliffs With a Cave System

In the small town of Stillwater, Minnesota, stands Lora. A 40-room boutique hotel with a storied past, this quaint stay has the perfect blend of history and charm. Once a brewery built into jagged bluffs in 1868, Lora’s massive cave system was used to store beer and source spring water. Following a fire, the structure was rebuilt and turned into Empire Brewery, which became one of the state’s largest breweries. When Prohibition began in 1920, the brewery was forced to close, however, nearly a century later in 2018, the site was transformed, and Lora hotel was built from the brewery’s original foundation. Today, this hotel welcomes guests who pass through the picturesque town.

With 40 rooms–including premium, deluxe, and two types of suites–Lora caters to every traveler’s needs. One of the most popular room options is the Deluxe Two Queen room, which is entirely window-free, making it perfect for a good night’s sleep. For those who want something different, premium rooms have large fireplaces, small seating areas, and big windows that overlook the city. As for the Lora suites, they’re spacious and comfortable, with some offering private patios and separate living areas. The standout stay is without a doubt the Stone House, a two-bedroom retreat adjacent to the hotel that has a massive spa-like master bathroom, a big family room, a dining area, and a kitchen.

In terms of dining, Lora has a few options. The on-site restaurant, Feller, offers a dining experience that celebrates the flavors of the Midwest. The menu, crafted by talented chefs (including Chef Sam Collins), features locally sourced ingredients and seasonal dishes that pay homage to the Great North. Diners can expect to see everything from Prairie Harvest quail and grass-fed bison to homemade venison sausages and smoked trout BLTs. For drinks, Lora has The Long Goodbye, which has a curated selection of craft cocktails and local brews, making it a nice spot to unwind after a day of exploring Stillwater. MADE, a street-level café attached to the hotel, has rich coffee, fresh pressed juices, and locally made pastries.

For those celebrating something special, Lora is Stillwater’s main wedding destination. The separate 2,600-square-foot event center, which is across from the hotel, can comfortably seat up to 150 guests for dinners and host up to 190 people for cocktail receptions. It also offers a private garden space, making it downtown Stillwater’s only venue with this amenity. In addition, the hotel also has the Cave Room located inside Feller, which can fit up to 36 guests for a seated event and up to 50 guests for a cocktail reception. With a window that peeks into the intricate cave system and rustic stone wall backdrops, this room is the perfect location for small gatherings. As for a very intimate spot, the Moon Lounge (also inside Feller) fits up to 10 guests and is conveniently located next to the bar.

What makes Lora stand out as one of Stillwater’s best hotels is its location. Located a few blocks away from the St. Croix River, the hotel is right in the middle of all the action. Guests can take a leisurely stroll along Main Street, visit local boutiques and galleries, or enjoy a lovely riverboat cruise down the water. Plus, the hotel’s concierge is always on hand to provide recommendations and assist with planning activities.

Whether you’re dreaming of a romantic getaway, family vacation, or solo trip, Lora is an ideal destination that captures the spirit and charm of Stillwater.
