Enjoy New England Surf & Turf At This Whimsical and Charming Restaurant in Boston’s Beacon Hill Neighborhood

For Kristin Jenkins, the journey to opening 1928 Beacon Hill was serendipitous. A longtime owner of Leonards New England, an esteemed antique shop in Seekonk, Jenkins had always harbored the dream of owning a restaurant.

One day in 2021, she happened to be strolling through Beacon Hill and stumbled upon the perfect location––an elegant spot (formerly home to the Persian restaurant, Lala Rokh) adorned with a handwritten “for rent” sign. Her entrepreneurial spirit ignited once more, Kristin immediately called the landlord and they got to talking. What followed was a complete renovation resulting in what is now regarded as a fixture in the neighborhood.

1928 Beacon Hill is a testament to Kristin’s two lifelong passions: hospitality and antiquing. Upon entering, guests are immediately welcomed by the “Lounge,” the first of 1928 Beacon Hill’s three distinct dining spaces.

The whimsical space features rattan light fixtures and plant holders, tropical flora, and a marble-topped 12-seat bar with a scalloped design evoking the scales of a mermaid’s tale. Antique furnishings were sourced from Leonard’s as well as Jenkins’ own collection. Once seated along the perfectly worn leather banquette that lines the room, guests may continue to uncover the bobs and bits perched along every ledge, such as Black Forest carved-walnut trophies and a historic sign from the Oak Room at the Fairmont Copley Plaza.

A mural of a white-haired man smoking a cigar dating back to the 1940s hangs on the back wall; with her background as an art preservationist, Jenkins was able to restore the piece––a fun fact the waitstaff are quick to share.

The American and Italian-inspired plates at 1928 Beacon Hill showcase local flavors and culinary craftsmanship. Start with a sumptuous Seafood Tower, stacked with fresh-caught market seafood, or Point Judith Calamari served with a side of Pomodoro sauce.

Upon glancing around the dining room, most tables can be found enjoying one of the pasta dishes, like Linguine & Clams or Orecchiette Sausage & Rabe.

Elevated surf and turf entrées include Halibut Picatta and Steak Frites. Do not skip the Cioppino for 2––this Italian-American fish stew originated in San Francisco and is related to the various fish soups found in traditional Italian cuisine. 1928 Beacon Hill serves theirs with saffron rice, lobster broth, local shellfish, halibut, swordfish, and lobster meat.

Cocktail enthusiasts are in for a treat with a lineup marrying inventive libations and the classics. The Alchemist stands out for its blend of Lunazul blanco tequila, zesty lime, fragrant rosemary syrup, and refreshing cucumber, topped with a kick from ginger beer and an unexpected twist: caviar for a touch of luxury.

For those craving a timeless favorite, the Tom Collins delivers with Plymouth Navy Strength Gin, fresh lemon, and a hint of sweetness from sugar, all topped off with soda for a crisp finish.

Round out the meal with one of 1928 Beacon Hill’s desserts, ranging from decadent Chocolate Cake to zesty Key Lime Pie. Pair it with an Espresso Martini, offering a sophisticated mix of reposado tequila, rich espresso, and smooth vanilla.

At 1928 Beacon Hill, the hospitality is unmatched, every detail tells a story, and guests can savor both the cuisine and the charm of the restaurant’s intimate surroundings.
