Hotels With Backstories That Will Put You in the Halloween Spirit

Happy Halloween! We’re rounding up some of our favorite hotels that are perfect for getting you in the Halloween spirit👇

1️⃣ The Alexandrian Hotel (@thealexandrianhotel): Alexandria, Virginia, is one of the United States’ quietest and most picturesque destinations. As it was founded in 1794, the city also has great historical significance; it was once one of the ten busiest ports in the country, and provided the backdrop for freedom and support for many Blacks and Union troops during the Civil War. To maintain Alexandria’s past – both in fact and in the paranormal truth – The Alexandrian Hotel hosts a wildly popular Ghost & Graveyard tour, where an 18th century costumed guide shares folklore, ghost stories, and legends dating back to the city’s founding.

2️⃣ The Stanley Hotel (@thestanleyhotel): This sweeping property in Estes Park, Colorado boasts modern, apartment-style guest rooms with views of the Rocky Mountains. It is also the hotel that inspired Stephen King’s “The Shining”; he and his wife stayed at The Stanley the night before it closed for the winter, and King described it as the ideal setting for a ghost story. The hotel includes “historic rooms with high-spirited activity” on its list of amenities, and even offers night spirit tours, during which participants are taken to various areas of the hotel where there are “active phenomena.”

3️⃣ Belmond Charleston Place (@belmondcharlestonplace): Widely known as America’s Holy City, Charleston, South Carolina, is a hotspot for ghost hunting – namely, for Edgar Allen Poe. Famous for poems “The Raven” and “The Tell-Tale Heart,” Poe’s whereabouts during his lifetime were hard to track, but evidence suggests he spent quite a bit of time in Charleston. Passing through Belmond’s Italian marble lobby, it may be shocking to find Poe’s portrait spanning a wall alongside 21 other South Carolinian writers. The “Portraits of Charleston” intends to celebrate noteworthy artists and creators who are relevant to Charleston’s past and present…however, many of the spirits of those who have since passed on have been spotted about the city.
