Situated in the heart of the ancient Edo capital, Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto, a Luxury Collection Hotel & Spa offers a true respite with a central location steps from Nijo Castle and a palpable sense of place. The polished property echoes what Kyoto does so well: integrate past and present. Steeped in heritage yet decidedly modern, it’s the perfect spot to unwind between temple hopping and digging into bowls of udon.

Upon arrival, guests are greeted by the Kajiimiya Gate. Originally built in 1703, the landmark structure sat in front of the Kajiimiya Palace, within the Kyoto Imperial Palace grounds, for more than 200 years before moving to the residence of the Mitsui family and finally finding a new home at Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto.

In contrast to the centuries-old gate, the rest of the architecture and the interiors are quite contemporary. The sleek lobby lounge faces the courtyard garden, which features a blossoming cherry tree and tranquil water elements. There’s also a library with art and books that honor Japanese heritage. A walkway framed by wooden arches nods to the famous Fushimi Inari Shrine.

Designed by Andre Fu, rooms and suites are influenced by traditional Japanese tearooms. Clean lines, muted tones, and artisan-crated details bring the style into the present. Large showers and giant stone soaking tubs enhance the relaxing atmosphere.

Guests looking to immerse themselves in local traditions can choose between cultural activities ranging from tea ceremonies and breathwork in the scroll-clad Shiki-no-ma room to touring a Kiyomizu ceramics studio.

Inspired by natural elements, the oasis-like spa is a serene spot to indulge in Anma massages and innovative facials and soak in the natural hot springs. Book the glorious private onsen bathing experience complete with Japanese breakfast for a memorable morning guaranteed to nourish your well-being.

Not just a feast for the senses but also the taste buds, the culinary offerings are a standout. Helmed by Chef Tetsuya Asano, Japan’s representative at the Bocuse d’Or International Culinary Competition 2027, TOKI, the signature restaurant, unites local Japanese ingredients and French techniques into a gastronomic triumph.

Many people are surprised to learn about the excellent pizza scene in Japan. Travelers craving a taste of Italy should order one of the crispy wood-fired pies at FORNI. During the day, it doubles as a lovely setting for afternoon tea with seasonal sweets like madeleines made with locally grown Kyoto strawberries.

An outdoor table with the soundtrack of the burbling fountain is a peaceful spot for a nightcap, whether you’re more in the mood for a cocktail made with local spirits or a glass of sake.

While there are countless reasons to check into Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto—from yuzu vitality treatments to tipples inspired by Tamba mist—above all else, the thoughtful and attentive service reflects a mastery of omotenashi, Japanese hospitality.
