Coming back from a vacation can sometimes be a bit of a shock to the system. After days of adventure, relaxation, or just escaping the throes of daily life, it makes sense as to why things can feel off when reality sets back in. That post-vacation slump, often called the “vacation blues,” is the culprit of why you might feel unmotivated or disconnected. “While on vacation, the pace is typically more carefree and relaxed,” explains licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Holly Schiff. “This contrasts quite sharply with the structured and responsibility-filled routine that follows. This can lead to a sense of loss and a drop in mood.” The good news is that while it’s natural, it doesn’t have to stick around for long. With a few simple strategies, you can make the transition back to reality much smoother.
Ahead, Dr. Schiff shares her best tips to help shake off the post-vacation blues and ease your way back into daily life.
Tip 1: Make a Ritual
“Creating a post-vacation ritual can definitely help in combating depression because it provides a sense of continuity and comfort during the transition back to your ‘normal’ life. Reflect on positive vacation memories and practice relaxation techniques. Reintroduce self-care practices in order to ease the emotional shift.”
Tip 2: Bring the Vacation Home
“Incorporating elements of the vacation experience into everyday life can significantly mitigate post-vacation blues. Maintain things like a leisurely morning routine, enjoy meals from your vacation destination, or set aside time for activities that brought you joy on the trip.
Use vacation-inspired scents or sounds, light a candle with a scent reminiscent of your vacation spot, or listen to music and sounds that remind you of your travels. The sensory connection can bring the vacation vibe into your home. It can also help maintain a sense of balance and calm and you brought a little bit of the vacation home with you–which also makes the transition less jarring.
Look for ways to incorporate small adventures into your routine, it keeps that sense of vacation exploration and novelty alive as well.”
Tip 3: Take It Slow
“To mitigate post-vacation blues, plan for a gentle transition, ease yourself back into work and avoid over-scheduling. Set small, enjoyable goals and plan future breaks. This reminds you that relaxation and enjoyment are possible even after the vacation ends and can offer a sense of anticipation.”
