We Stayed at the First Eco-Beach Resort in the Azores—Here’s What It Was Like

Despite its hype as  the “Hawaii of Europe,” the Azores remains a little-touched natural haven. While the Azores is an archipelago of nine volcanic islands, you don’t necessarily need to explore every single island to get a slice of tropical paradise. On the main island, São Miguel, rests Santa Barbara Eco Resort, this aforementioned paradise is nature’s luxe retreat.

Set above the lava sand beaches of Ribeira Grande, the boutique resort unfolds to the edge of the cliff. Check in at the main reception—separated from the accommodations—with glass windows looking out onto fire pits and loungers, the restaurant’s alfresco dining, and of course, the sprawling lush green mountains and crystal blue waters beyond. The receptionist will give you a phone for the duration of your stay, which can be used to contact the property, as well as check the weather and receive local alerts. For those who don’t want to have to constantly pick up the hotel phone or run to the front desk, the device providing the most minimal of contact is welcome, especially when nestled in your cozy room.

The accommodations alternate from studios to one and two bedroom villas, each equipped with either a saltwater pool or Jacuzzi. Featuring a kitchenette, living room, and spacious balcony, ebb from indoor to outdoor as you explore your room. Catch the rainbows that often arc across the sky from your outdoor seating, and pop a bottle of champagne as you take in the distant rolling hills. Much like the rest of the resort, every element of the accommodation has been designed with the natural environment at the forefront.

João Reis, the entrepreneur and surfer who dreamed up Santa Barbara, seamlessly integrated the terrain and existing surroundings into the property’s architecture to minimize impact on the landscape. The construction process prioritized natural materials while decorative details were incorporated to celebrate the traditions of the Azores.

Dine at the on-site restaurant for meals consisting of the locally-grown produce served in traditional Azorean dishes. From the fresh milk bread to the freshly-picked garden salad to the tender beef tenderloin, the resort has culinary feats  to satiate all curious palettes. Alternatively, you can also opt for a more casual meal at the Beach Club. Venture through a door in the garden to come to the surf shack, which locals and guests alike populate. Live music drifts through the air on the weekends, and you can watch the surfers from your perch as you feast on “barrel” sandwiches (bread rolled with cheese and meats) and crisp chips. Stay through the sunset, sipping your spritz and tasting the island life.
