Jaipur, the vibrant capital of India’s Rajasthan state, beckons travelers with its rich history, stunning architecture, and cultural delights. Known as the ‘Pink City’ due to the color of its buildings, Jaipur offers a blend of traditional Rajasthani heritage and modern amenities. Here’s where to stay, eat, drink, and visit while here, courtesy of HAP CEO Brandon Berkson.
Where to Stay:
The Raj Palace
Located in the heart of Jaipur, the luxe Raj Palace is a historic gem initially built in 1727, once the residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur. With 50 luxurious rooms and suites, this Small Luxury Hotels of the World member showcases Rajput and Mughal architecture, featuring opulent furnishings, intricate frescoes, and expansive courtyards.
Raffles Jaipur
This truly is one of India’s nicest five-star hotels, a 40-minute drive from Jaipur’s center. It’s boutique-ish, with its 50 rooms, tantalizing spa, suites cum private plunge pools, plus artisanal, nowhere-near-tacky recreations of Maharaja palaces inside and out.
Where to Eat:
Bar Palladio
Situated within Narain Niwas Palace, Bar Palladio captivates with its striking blue interiors designed by Marie-Anne Oudejans (she also decorated Polo Palladio: Jaipur’s top member’s club, which you can enter up to three times without membership for a small fee). Bar Palladio serves international-meets-Italian cuisine amidst a space adorned with hand-painted motifs, velvet upholstery, and a serene ambiance.
Mohan Mahal
Located at the Leela Palace—a 40-minute drive out of town—this candle-lit restaurant enchants diners with its majestic décor that’s kitted out in thousands of mirror pieces. Traditional Rajasthani plates and local performers playing cultural soundtracks will woo you and your dinner guest. While it’s a bit of a shlep from Jaipur’s locus, it’s worth the drive. (To be honest, if you ask me, it’s one of the prettiest restaurants I’ve ever seen.)
Where to Drink:
Native Cocktail Room, Gopalbari
Known for its innovative cocktails, including the famous Wily Wonka made with cocoa butter, the Native Cocktail Room combines contemporary décor with local craftsmanship. It’s a stylish destination to enjoy creative drinks in a cozy setting.
Where to Visit:
City Palace and Hawa Mahal
City Palace, an architectural marvel in the heart of Jaipur, dates back to the early 18th century, with construction initiated by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. Built between 1727 and 1732, it served as the royal residence of the Maharajas of Jaipur and continues to be a symbol of their opulence and power. Nearby, Hawa Mahal, the Palace of Winds (aka Jaipur’s top hallmark), stands tall with its unique honeycomb design, best viewed from the rooftop terrace of the coffee shop across the street.
Shop at Palace Atelier + Kanota Courtyard
Palace Atelier within City Palace showcases upmarket authentic Rajasthani crafts. Right next to Bar Palladio, Kanota Courtyard features a bundle of chic boutiques selling traditional folklore and accouterments—Andraab sells top-line cashmere, making it a must-visit in our book.
Amber Fort & Paana Meena Kund
A UNESCO World Heritage site, Amber Fort’s hilltop location offers stunning views of Maota Lake. Visitors can experience elephant rides in the morning or explore its palaces and courtyards. Guided tours provide insights into its historical significance and architectural splendor.
Galtaji Monkey Temple
Located amidst the Aravalli hills, Galtaji is a serene Hindu pilgrimage site known for its natural springs and ancient temples. Friendly monkeys roam the temple complex, adding to its mystical allure. The best times to visit are early morning or late afternoon to enjoy its peaceful ambiance and scenic beauty.
