Jagged, snow-capped mountains, towering bottle-brush trees, and winding cliffside roads: this is the scenery that greets travelers on their way to Hotel La Perla. Each twisting turn into the Alta Badia region of the Dolomites quite literally reveals jaw-dropping views, leading the way into the small town of Corvara. Tucked away in a valley and at the base of the mountains lies “The Pearl”–a family-run chalet that has rightfully earned a high-standing reputation in Italy and beyond.

What started as a small six-room house in 1939 by Ernesto Costa, a ski instructor-turned-plumber, has since been transformed into a cozy and stylish 51-key stay–and, not to mention, one of the top spots in Alta Badia. With incredible views from every window (don’t miss the sauna’s perspective), a family history passed down through three generations, and all the luxury a discerning traveler could wish for, La Perla is like a home away from home—just with way better views and even better service.

The rooms perfectly capture the welcoming vibe with a mix of comfort and charm. Designed with unique antiques carefully selected by Annie Costa—like vintage teapots, old hats, and quirky cutting boards—each space tells its own story. But it’s not just about the decor; the rooms are made for utmost relaxation, featuring big bathtubs for a soak after a day on the slopes and cozy breakfast nooks ideal for reading the morning paper. Most rooms also come with spacious balconies that have sweeping views of the Dolomites, making every glance outside one to remember.

Speaking of making memories, La Perla has no shortage of great dining spots, each with its own personality. Les Stües Restaurant brings the rustic charm of Ladin tradition to the table, serving hearty dishes in a cabin-like setting. For something a little more elevated, La Stüa de Michil—La Perla’s Michelin-starred standout—blends tradition with innovation for a dining experience that’s both refined and unique. (Portions are generous, so taking things slow is the way to go.) Wine lovers will most definitely want to carve out time for the Mahatma Wine Cellar, an award-winning collection featuring rare bottles from around the world.

For something more laid-back, the Bistrot Music Club has Italian-Mediterranean bites, while L’Murin shifts with the seasons—an easygoing brewery in summer and a buzzing après-ski spot in winter. Then there’s Restaurant Ladinia, where Alpine flavors pair effortlessly with panoramic views of Mount Sassongher. Trust us, every meal is too good to be true.

After a great meal (or two), enjoying some much-deserved time at the Salus per Aquam Spa is a must. Tucked away on the lower level, this wellness retreat is all about slowing down and soaking it in—literally. The sauna alone is worth a visit, with views of the Dolomites that look like a postcard. The indoor pool is great for a dip, while Turkish baths and Kneipp treatments make it a worthy place to unwind. Plus, treatments are available for those who really want to indulge after a long day.

For those who love the great outdoors, La Perla couldn’t be a better home base. In the winter, skiing takes center stage, with direct access to the Dolomiti Superski area and over 745 miles of runs to explore. The Gran Risa ski run—famous for its World Cup races—is practically next door, making it a treat for anyone up for a challenge. But if going at a slower pace is more preferred, there are plenty of scenic slopes, mountain huts serving up warm drinks (Jimmi Hut is our top choice), and stunning views along the way.

Once the snow melts, Alta Badia swaps skis for hiking boots, offering everything from leisurely strolls through wildflower-filled meadows to long treks up Sassongher and Piz Boè. The hotel even organizes guided hikes, so exploring the Dolomites is as easy as lacing up a pair of boots. What’s more, cyclists and skiers can tackle the legendary Sellaronda route during any season, while food lovers can hop between mountain huts for a taste of local Ladin specialties like speck and canederli. Corvara’s village center is also just a short walk away, perfect for wandering through boutiques, grabbing a coffee, or just taking in the views.

No matter what brings you to Alta Badia, La Perla is where you’ll find the best of the Dolomites.
