This Carmel-by-the-Sea Stay Is a Quaint, Coastal Dream

Some places make you wonder if you should drop everything and move there—Carmel-by-the-Sea is one of them. Located along the rugged Northern California coast, this small town is as charming as a fairy tale. And, tucked into the heart of it lies Le Petit Pali at 8th Ave, a boutique hotel that feels less like a hotel and more like a well-kept secret your most well-traveled friend swears by. It’s effortlessly chic, endlessly cozy, and the perfect place to call home when in Carmel.

The building itself is a quintessential Carmel craftsman-style cottage, complete with shingled exteriors, tangled greenery, and sun-soaked patios dotted with marble bistro tables, scalloped-trim umbrellas, and vintage-style forest green bikes with wicker baskets. Inside, the 24 rooms are small but impossibly homey, outfitted in soft Bellino linens, stocked with Diptyque bath products, and finished with Marshall speakers that add an old-fashioned touch. Some rooms even have warm fireplaces and private balconies, making them feel like the ultimate getaway. As a warm welcome, fresh flowers and a well-stocked drink station—including everything needed to make a special drink—await in-room. And each evening, homemade cookies are left on the beds–a very sweet way to end the day.

As for mornings, they start the best way possible—with a complimentary spread of fresh pastries from Rise + Roam Bakery,  seasonal fruit, really good coffee, and even a little bubbly. There’s no restaurant on-site, but with spots like La Bicyclette and Aubergine just a short walk away, you won’t miss it.

Speaking of a short walk, when it’s time to explore, the hotel’s location couldn’t be better. Carmel Beach is just a 10-minute walk away—ideal for a morning stroll on the sand or watching the sun set over the Pacific. The town itself both looks and feels like a storybook come to life, with cobblestone streets, ivy-covered cottages, and not a single chain store in sight. Instead, cute cafés, great shops, hidden wine bars, and nearly 100 art galleries (!) pepper the streets. If golf is your thing, you’re in luck—some of the best courses in the country (plus the famous 17-Mile Drive) are less than 40 minutes away. Whether in traffic or not, the scenery alone makes it worth it.

After a day out, the lobby is the perfect spot to unwind. Grab a big chair by the fire and enjoy the relaxed coastal vibe and decor. The courtyard is also a nice place to mingle, especially if the hotel is hosting an event with a local restaurant or shop.

No matter why you’re visiting, Carmel has a way of making you feel right at home. Be forewarned though—you might find yourself daydreaming about owning a small cottage by the beach, getting a dog, and becoming the type of person who enjoys long sunrise walks. And if that dream ever comes true, it would look a lot like a (very) extended stay at Le Petit Pali.
