Move over, Hamptons—there’s a new contender for the ultimate beachside escape. Nestled in Lake Huron, Michigan, the idyllic Mackinac Island has been a well-kept secret among Midwesterners for over a century, offering a timeless charm that quietly rivals America’s favorite summer getaways. But word is quickly spreading about the car-less escape (the only city in America that has banned automobiles altogether), and for good reason. Your next summer vacation simply must be at Mackinac Island, and we’ve put together a guide for your perfect trip.
Where to Stay
The Inn at Stonecliffe
The beautifully renovated estate, once a private residence to a wealthy Chicago family, recently reopened in 2024 after a two-year hiatus for enhancements and improvements. Located about two miles away from the quaint hustle and bustle of downtown, this stunning escape overlooks Lake Huron and is easily the most relaxing and bucolic property on the island.
Hotel Iroquois
Located immediately on the waterfront just a few steps away from the ferry dock, this charming and historic inn is known for its al fresco dining options and its colorful rooms. Designed to capture the very essence of summer—what with its gardens and private sunbathing beach – the beautiful Hotel Iroquois is the perfect place to appreciate the warmer months of the Great Lakes.
Where to Eat
Kingston Kitchen
You may not think of upper Michigan as the ideal place to experience authentic Jamaican cuisine, but get ready to be surprised. Thanks to the creative mind of Chef Shawn of Kingston, Jamaica, diners in Mackinac are finding new ways to enjoy Michigan whitefish with island flavors from much further down south.
Jockey Club
Situated right next to the Grand Hotel’s beautiful golf course, a destination in and of itself on Mackinac Island, the Jockey Club is the perfect place to both enjoy a meal and the local sights. We’re particularly partial to weekend brunch, which includes Grand Marnier French Toast and Blackberry Mint Julep Margaritas.
Where to Drink
Lucky Bean Coffee House
The best coffee on Mackinac is undoubtedly at Lucky Bean Coffee House, which has been caffeinating residents and visitors alike since 2011. Trust us, you won’t be disappointed.
Pink Pony
While it’s not actually the inspiration behind Chappell Roan’s hit song, you can still jam out to Pink Pony Club while at this iconic bar on the island. With a history dating back well over 70 years, there are plenty of memories—old and new—to be made.
Where to Visit
Great Turtle Brewery & Distillery
Bearing the distinction of the island’s “first and only craft brewery and distillery,” Great Turtle is the perfect place to catch up with old friends or make some new ones. The large bar is undoubtedly the perfect place to grab a beer after a long bike ride.
Original Murdick’s Fudge
In a city (and state) known for its fudge, you’ll want to pay a special visit to Murdick’s. The store claims to use their family’s original recipe from 1887, and the resulting fudge is undeniably tasty.
Doud’s Market
Known as the oldest grocery store in America (dating back to 1884), Doud’s is the perfect place to grab a sandwich, a bottle of wine, or a Mackinac keepsake.
Fort Mackinac
Fort Mackinac—originally built by the British during the American Revolutionary War—has long been a strategic point on the Great Lakes. Now, you can visit the fort and even enjoy a cup of tea.
Top of Arch Rock
Getting to Arch Rock is not the easiest thing in the world (especially given that getting anywhere on Mackinac will require a bike ride), but the views from the top are absolutely stunning. We’d recommend heading over at sunrise or sunset.
