Set the scene.
Nami Nori has revolutionized the stateside sushi scene with its innovative open-style temaki (hand rolls), offering a fresh and approachable take on traditional Japanese cuisine. Since its debut in 2019, this New York-based restaurant is focused on elevating an omakase-adjacent experience without the exclusivity and hefty price tag.
The interior design complements the restaurant’s modern technique to Japanese cuisine. Each location is minimalistic yet warm and inviting environments. The sleek, clean lines of the décor are paired with natural materials, creating a soothing atmosphere that allows the vibrant flavors of each dish to take center stage.
Patented custom wood temaki holders serve as functional art pieces, adding an artisanal touch to the setting. With subtle lighting and an open design, Nami Nori feels both intimate and accessible.
What can we expect from the food?
The menu revolves around unique hand rolls, which boast an open-style presentation highlighting each ingredient’s freshness and artistry. Nami Nori’s founders, Taka Sakaeda, Jihan Lee, and Lisa Limb, popularized this innovative perspective in 2019.
Begin the meal with options “from the kitchen” such as Shishito Peppers with smoked honey miso; Ocean Trout Sashimi with orange ponzu; and the Spicy Tuna Dip with serrano and Asian pear.
The open-style temaki are standouts, with selections such as Spicy Lobster (butter-poached with tobiko, shiso, and crispy potato) and Toro Scallion, alongside an array of vegetarian choices like Eggplant with red miso and gobo chips.
Temaki Sets are an ever-popular choice with the wide-spread favorite being The Signature, featuring Tuna Poke, X.O. Scallop, Coconut Shrimp, Salmon Serrano, and Cucumber Black Sesame.
Tell us about the drinks.
Last spring, the restaurant introduced its first spirits-based beverage program, crafted in collaboration with cocktail consultant Molly McClintock.
Inspired by the playful ethos of Japanese cuisine, the cocktail menu features twists on classic drinks, using local ingredients from Brooklyn-based companies. The Matcharita 2.0 enhances the beloved cocktail with Mijenta Tequila, matcha, agave, and Hana Makgeolli.
Others include the Parkside Spritz (Roku Gin, miso honey, and Campari) and The McCarren, a Japanese twist on the Manhattan made with Suntory Toki Whiskey and Okakura Sweet Vermouth.
The bar also includes a curated selection of premium Japanese whiskies, such as Hibiki Harmony and Yamazaki 12.
