This Luxury Stay in Yountville, California, Is Made for Vinophiles

There are a million reasons to visit Napa Valley. North Block Hotel, however, gives you a million and one. It may even—dare we say—top the list by giving travelers, vinophiles, and staycationers the perfect jumping-off point from which to explore stunning Yountville (perhaps the food capital of the United States) and the cornucopia of vineyards just a few miles beyond.

With its sprawling, villa-like footprint, the Mediterranean-flavored North Block Hotel is intimate and luxurious, with an open-air courtyard at the center of this 20-room boutique property. The hotel comprises several standalone multi-level buildings, each housing a couple of rooms or an amenity. Guests are welcomed in an immaculately decorated lobby that feels more like a Spanish salon than a check-in point.

Of course, your choice of welcome beverage (red, white, rose, or bubbles) stands at the ready, as with most hotels in wine country. Also located in the lobby building are the spa and the compact gym. And every morning, you’ll find a scrumptious continental breakfast spread complete with mimosas, complimentary for hotel guests.

A short jaunt through the courtyard will take you to your room, either on the ground level or second level of the Tuscan-inspired buildings. If you can, request a second-floor room for beautiful views not only of the property (including the stunning year-round pool and hot tub), but of the hills of the Valley as well.

Regardless of location, however, each room is elegantly appointed in earthy tones and wood accents. You’ll find comfortable leather easy chairs, sumptuous weighted blankets, and soft lighting. Some rooms also come with fireplaces, and all rooms feature either balconies or patios to enjoy some fresh air. We love the expansive bathrooms as well, with their soaking tubs and large showers, alongside custom bath amenities with organic essential oils (available for purchase in the lobby).

As undeniably fabulous as the rooms at North Block are, let’s be honest – you didn’t come to Napa Valley (much less Yountville) to stay in your room. And luckily, you won’t have to go far from the hotel to experience top-notch dining and drinking.

Spring Vegetable Salad | Butter Lettuce, Snow Peas, Asparagus, Carrots, Radishes, English Peas, Creamy Red Wine Vinaigrette

For starters, it would be criminal to miss a meal at the property’s eponymous on-site restaurant. The stunning dining room is home to beautiful takes on Californian food by chef Juan Cabrera, a rising star in a food scene where neighbors include Thomas Keller and the late Michael Chiarello. But Cabrera holds his own with inventive dishes highlighting the freshness and bounty of the local flora and fauna. Whether you opt for the tasting menu (with drink pairings), the a la carte menu, or even bites from happy hour, you can’t go wrong.

If you want to venture out, head to Ad Hoc just down the street, perhaps Thomas Keller’s most approachable Yountville dining destination. With its generous family-style portions of ever-rotating salads, entrees, local cheeses, and desserts, Ad Hoc makes breaking bread a true social affair. And, of course, go when there’s fried chicken.

Regarding the wine in Yountville, K. Laz, with its petite tasting room yet stunning collection of rare wines, is a must-see. For a fun pairing, head to Priest Ranch to get some bacon with your vino. And for a truly special occasion, it is absolutely worth the short drive to Quintessa, whose eco-friendly vineyard set upon 280 acres of pristine rolling lands produces some of the most delectable wine in the region. Set yourself in a private tasting room for a truly unforgettable experience.

When you’re done wine tasting, head back to North Block and take advantage of their complimentary evening nightcap with just a little taste of a beautiful whiskey or brandy, which is perfect to wash down your bedtime chocolate. So whether you’re in Yountville for the food, the wine, or just the climate, starting and ending your stay at North Block is a sure way to have the time of your life.
