Rome’s New Boutique Hotel Proves the Roman Empire Can Be Trendy

Leitmotiv, the hospitality hotshots behind the Alpine-chic Cœur de Megève and Parisian playground La Fantaisie, has just dropped its Roman magnum opus: Casa Monti. (Dare we say it’s the Eternal City’s newest boutique hotel obsession?)

Tucked in Monti—the city’s trendiest quarter—Casa Monti melds effortlessly with its environs, radiating a modish Roman charisma that’s as magnetic as it is authentic, easily witnessable through the independent shops and eateries lining streets here.

Interior designer Laura Gonzales took her cues from the Italian flair for sprezzatura—an air of casual elegance—and worked her magic: the stairway’s unique wallpaper displaying mythological scenes with figures from ancient times, the spa’s lemon-imprinted chaises and curtains, then hallways bedecked in chromatically festive carpet oozing vibrancy are just a few examples of her many hyper-creative successes onsite. Rooms mix antiques, Italian craftsmanship, and commissioned art (for us, the interweaving floral patterns above beds and sofas stole our design-centric hearts).

Inside, the lobby-level Casa Monti Bar is draped in neutral hues and travertine tile. Cocktail before or after dinner, they’ve got you covered (all in style, of course).

Need a dinner reservation? Casa Monti Ristorante opens to a terrace and comprises a menu packed with Roman culinary delights. (The Tiramisu is game-changing—you can thank us later.)

For a touch of sky-high sophistication, ascend to Casa Monti Rooftop, where you can enjoy libations amidst chic sky-blue décor, all while soaking in an unmatched panorama of Rome’s abundant terracotta rooftops. The interior of the rooftop bar displays a painstakingly tasteful mural depicting birds flying in the sky, ancient Romans, and a huddle of deer, fronted by bar stools kitted out in artfully mismatched patterns.

The spa on the 5th floor pays homage to the rejuvenating magic of once-upon-a-time Roman baths. This exclusive Susanne Kaufmann spa bathes in Rome’s golden glow, offering a luxurious jacuzzi and a sweeping terrace view ideal for unwinding after a day of learning about the Roman Empire.

Casa Monti is the talk of the town—and once you visit, it’s not hard to understand why.
