Why the Rusty Parrot Is Jackson Hole’s Best Boutique Stay

The beauty of Jackson, Wyoming, lies in its juxtaposition of untouched wilderness and refined luxury. On one hand, the Grand Tetons and proximity to national parks make it home to endless outdoor adventures. In contrast, the town itself, known as Jackson (Jackson Hole refers to the larger valley and surrounding region), boasts multi-million dollar homes, high-end boutiques, gourmet restaurants, and exclusive resorts. Spots like the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar give glimpses of the town’s Wild West roots, while others like Kemo Sabe prove it isn’t as rustic as it once was. This blend of nature and sophistication draws in both locals and travelers who appreciate its unique vibe. As for the perfect place to experience this blend? The Rusty Parrot Lodge and Spa, of course. This boutique hotel, just a few blocks from the town center, blends Wyoming’s rugged beauty with laid-back luxury, offering guests a stay that reflects the best of both worlds—just like the city of Jackson itself.

The story of the Rusty Parrot began in the late 1980s when Ron Harrison envisioned a hotel that felt like home. He headed to Jackson, one of his favorite cities, where he and his family—including Brandon, his teenage son at the time and now General Manager—started work on one of Jackson Hole’s first luxury boutique hotels. When it opened in December 1990, it was adored by the locals, thanks to its authentic touches and inviting atmosphere. In 2019, a fire tragically destroyed the property, but after four years of rebuilding, the Harrison family revived the hotel, preserving its nostalgic charm while introducing fresh, luxurious upgrades. Reopened in July 2024, the Rusty Parrot is back and better than ever.

The accommodations are, without a doubt, the star of the show here, each one designed to feel like your personal mountain retreat. Picture cozy European down comforters, plush mattresses, and fireplaces that just beg you to relax. There’s also plenty of custom-designed furniture and local artwork that give the rooms a personal touch, along with fun little extras like teddy bears and local treats that add to the charm. Large windows usher in tons of natural light and offer amazing views of Jackson Hole, so guests feel close to nature in the comfort of their rooms. As for the bathrooms, they’re pure relaxation—featuring rainfall showers and soaking tubs, plus luxury touches like Amouage hand soap, Body Sage Spa’s red wine eye masks, and a L’Occitane vanity set for extra pampering.

For those who want to get a true taste of Jackson Hole, Wild Sage is the spot. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, but don’t let that fool you—the food is next level. The menu at Wild Sage is all about showcasing the best of what the town has to offer, with a focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients. The chefs take a relaxed approach to fine dining, offering creative, flavorful dishes that never feel too formal. Whether it’s a perfectly seared steak, a unique fish dish, or a vegetable-forward plate, the focus is on sustainability and local sourcing. Plus, the menu changes with the seasons, so there’s always something new to look forward to. And for a perfect nightcap, head to Wild Sage Bar for a crafted cocktail or glass of wine—perfect to unwind after an amazing meal.

Speaking of unwinding, Body Sage Spa is the ideal retreat. On the first floor of the hotel, it offers a range of treatments to relax both the body and mind. From therapeutic massages that ease post-adventure aches to facials that hydrate and nourish skin exposed to the mountain elements, the spa uses natural, locally sourced products. The spa also offers access to a relaxation room, seasonal outdoor space, and a hot tub–all of which can be enjoyed before or after treatments.

In terms of amenities, the Rusty Parrot has a handful of thoughtful touches. For starters, there’s the outdoor hot tub, perfect for unwinding after a day of adventure, or if a more serene vibe is what’s needed, the rooftop deck is ideal for stargazing while soaking in the mountain air. Inside, there’s a cozy library on the second floor (yes, guests can read the books), always stocked with coffee and tea, along with freshly baked cookies served daily at 3 p.m. Wildlife enthusiasts will appreciate the wildlife viewing deck, with binoculars available at the front desk. For getting around, the hotel offers both electric and non-electric bikes, great for exploring the area. During ski season, a shuttle runs to Jackson Hole Mountain, making it even easier to hit the slopes. Plus, nightly turndown service includes family traditions like cowboy poems, making the experience feel personal.

As for how the hotel got its unique name? That’s a tale only told by a member of the Harrison family themselves (and trust us, it’s one you’ll want to hear in person—it’s the rule!). If that doesn’t make the stay more intriguing, we’re not sure what will.
