North Yorkshire is famous for many things, but its picturesque seaside and its sweeping moors are two of the most notable. These natural elements comprise the iconography behind Saltmoore, a getaway resort that cleverly pays homage to its location on the North Sea coast between the beach towns of Whitby and Sandsend—and not far from the North York Moors National Park. Previously known as Raithwaite Hall and once the home of a wealthy shipping magnate, the upscale property has been reimagined in an airy, contemporary style that emphasizes relaxation.
The 30-acre estate, nestled in a tree-lined valley just off the coastal road, dates back to the 19th century and comprises several buildings, some of which are still undergoing construction and renovation as Saltmoore completes its refurbishment. The impressive main house can be found at the end of a narrow, winding street, where the grand reception feels more like an arrival into a private residence than a traditional hotel. The aesthetic is understated elegance, augmented by professional service and a glass of sparkling tea upon arrival. The lobby is small, with easy access to the restaurants and bars and the downstairs spa from the check-in desk.
The 43 rooms and suites, spread throughout the building, embrace a quiet, pastoral aesthetic, complete with pale, earthy tones and artful books about the area. There’s a genuine sense of calm throughout the spaces, but particularly in the uniquely-appointed guest rooms, which draw inspiration from the beach and local flora. Some feature terraces or balconies, while others offer free-standing bathtubs and cozy armchairs perfect for an afternoon with a book. The chic toiletries come from English brand Wildsmith, and guests can partake in a selection of herbal teas from London merchant H. R. Higgins alongside coffee from Grind in the minibar.
The Sanctuary, Saltmoore’s spa, is one of its biggest draws, particularly in rainy or foggy weather. Double-wide loungers surround an indoor pool, and the reception will smartly book one for you in advance to ensure it doesn’t get overcrowded. Amenities include a steam room, whirlpool, and sauna lined with glowing bricks of Himalayan salt. Adjacent to the spa is a modern gym that prioritizes weight training over cardio options, although it will do the trick if it’s too rainy to explore. The wellness café, open during the day time, serves healthy lunch dishes, tea and coffee, and potent drinks, which can be enjoyed poolside.
Before dinner, guests can enjoy a cocktail in front of the fireplace in the Lounge Bar, an intimate spot with thoughtfully-placed boardgames around the tables. The light-soaked Orangerie Bar, notable for its glass roof and outdoor terrace, offers afternoon tea, while The Brasserie showcases local ingredients with a refined, comforting British cooking style. Helmed by head chef Adam Maddock and consulting chef Tommy Banks, the restaurant spotlights ingredients like Whitby crab with an indulgent crab tart and the seaside obsession with fish and chips in the form of crispy, battered cod cheeks. The desserts are especially thoughtful, spotlighting favorites of the region like sticky toffee pudding and heather honey cake.
Although the hotel isn’t exactly on the beach, both the two-mile Whitby Beach and the smaller Sandsend Beach are easily accessible on foot or by car (which you will realistically need to access Saltmoore anyway). Summertime brings swimming, paddleboarding, and fishing, while the colder months invite visitors to stroll along the shore or to explore the famed Whitby Abbey, one of Bram Stoker’s inspirations for Dracula. The historic Whitby Golf Club offers striking views of the sea from its 18-hole course, and farther along the coast Robin Hood’s Bay is a distinctly charming town (which you may recognize from Phantom Thread).
Later in 2025, Saltmoore will add Calluna, a fine dining restaurant, and the Beach House Bar, along with an additional 29 Beach House rooms. The estate is a stylish addition to the North York coast, ensuring that discerning travelers can find upscale accommodation is a part of England lesser known to American visitors.
