Inside Reykjavik’s Most Luxurious Oceanside Geothermal Lagoon

Known as the land of fire and ice, Iceland has a unique landscape dotted with volcanoes and natural hot springs. Because of this, geothermal bathing has been part of the country’s culture since as early as the Viking Age. These naturally heated waters, which are rich in minerals, became places where Icelanders were able to rest, relax, and spend time with others. Even as the centuries passed, geothermal bathing remained a key part of locals’ lives, proving that good things never go out of style. Today, one geothermal spa is highlighting that exactly, blending old with new and combining tradition and luxury. Meet Sky Lagoon

Located on the coastline just 15 minutes outside downtown Reykjavík, Sky Lagoon is Iceland’s newest ~hotspot~ for wellness and relaxation. Opened in 2021, this geothermal spa has a stunning mix of modern design (the turf wall is absolutely astonishing) and traditional Icelandic bathing culture, all set against a backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean. With an infinity-edge pool that features sweeping views of the horizon, Sky Lagoon knows exactly how to make visitors feel connected to nature.

While the design of the spa is incredible, the experience at the heart of Sky Lagoon is what makes it exceptional. Revolving around a seven-step ritual known as the Skjól Bathing Ritual (Skjól means ‘retreat’ or ‘shelter’ in Icelandic), this circuit is a way for visitors to experience the traditions of Icelandic bathing culture for themselves.

The experience (which can take as long or as little as guests would like) begins with a welcoming, warm soak in the lagoon waters. The lagoon itself is massive, with secluded coves, a beautiful waterfall, and a swim-up bar (more about that later). The geothermal waters are perfectly warm (read: not too hot and not too cold), perfect for floating, swimming, or simply enjoying the view. After the introductory soak, guests move to the next step, which is hopping into a crisp, cold plunge. This not only boosts circulation and reduces muscle soreness, but it also enhances mental clarity. (Physical wellness isn’t the only perk of ritual.)  After the cold plunge, it’s time to hit one of the saunas. Whether guests choose the classic or phone-free sauna, they’ll be able to enjoy a range of benefits, including circulation, detoxification, and true relaxation. Plus, the views from the saunas are unparalleled, thanks to the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, which are the two largest single windows in Iceland.

From there, guests make their way into an outdoor space where cold mist sprinkles down on them. Chilling and invigorating, this step leads to a relaxing full-body scrub. Small cups of salt scrub are placed in the next room, allowing guests to exfoliate their skin at their own pace. Once they’re covered in the scrub, they then can enjoy time in a steam room where the benefits of the scrub are maximized. Finally, guests are invited to sip on an Icelandic elixir (which features the essence of krækiber or crowberries that dot the island’s lava fields), to conclude the seven steps. The best part? Once the Skjól ritual is over, guests can head back to the lagoon, where they can soak for as long as they please.

Aside from the ritual, Sky Lagoon also offers other benefits. Gelmir Bar, the swim-up bar, is stocked with everything from Icelandic beer and mixed drinks to glasses of wine and champagne. And, because no one wants to be swimming with their wallet, all guests have to do is charge their order to their wristband to make a purchase, and the rest can be taken care of at checkout. What’s more, Sky Lagoon has two eateries on property– Keimur Café and Smakk Bar. The café serves pastries, bagels, coffee, and light bites, while Smakk Bar offers unique tasting platters inspired by traditional Icelandic cuisine.

No matter what draws you to Sky Lagoon, you’ll quickly learn that it’s not just a geothermal spa; it’s an experience that seamlessly blends Icelandic tradition with relaxed luxury. From the amazing views of the ocean to the thoughtfully curated seven-step ritual, each aspect of the lagoon is special in its own way. Trust us, a visit to Sky Lagoon is truly a must for anyone who wants to experience all that Iceland has to offer.
