A Sophisticated Stay in Carmel-by-the-Sea’s Newest Luxury Boutique Hotel

Carmel-by-the-Sea is the kind of place that looks like it’s been pulled right out of the pages of a storybook. Quaint streets, fairytale-inspired European cottages, and endless views of the Pacific Ocean make this town as charming as it is affluent. It has an effortless blend of both seaside luxury and California’s quintessential laid-back vibe, complete with everything from surf shops and family-owned restaurants to wine-tasting rooms and tiny bed and breakfasts.

Originally home to the Rumsen people, the area became a go-to spot for Spanish missionaries in the 18th century. By the early 1900s, Carmel had transformed into an artist’s haven, attracting writers, painters, and poets to its streets. Big names like Jack London and Robinson Jeffers helped put the town on the map, earning it the title of a “hotbed of soulful culture” by the Los Angeles Times in 1910.

Today, Carmel still embraces its artistic, small-town allure, making it an ideal (and upscale) escape for those looking to enjoy the coast. While its history runs deep, the town has evolved, welcoming fresh additions to its cobblestone streets. The newest gem is Stilwell Hotel, which opened in May 2024. With a sleek, modern design and an air of coastal comfort, it perfectly captures Carmel-by-the-Sea’s vibe—a place where sophistication meets California’s easygoing shoreline.

Located just two blocks from the main street (Ocean Avenue), Stilwell is almost like a private retreat in the picturesque city. Gallery by the Sea and Carmel’s Bistro Giovanni lead the way to the hotel, giving guests a sneak peek of the town’s art and food scene before even stepping through the door. Once on the property, guests are greeted by an outdoor fireplace that warms up the entrance. It’s the lobby, though, that really sets the tone for the whole place—stylish but not stuffy, luxurious without being over the top. The decor is relaxed yet modern, with dark wood finishes, soft neutral tones, and cool furniture that make the space feel inviting from the get-go.

The guest rooms at Stilwell are just as impressive, with a range of styles to suit every need—from cozy rooms for solo travelers to spacious suites perfect for couples or families. Guests can choose from rooms with balconies, suites featuring fireplaces, or even ones with small courtyards. The Carmel Bay Suite is the star of the show, boasting ocean views, multiple seating areas, and an incredible bathroom. No matter the room, each one is designed with both comfort and style in mind, featuring plush bedding, buttery-soft linens, and aesthetic furnishings that are both nice to look at and very practical. Large windows fill the rooms with natural light, offering views of the mountains, neighborhood, and sparkling ocean.

Dining at the hotel is another highlight, with its small but mighty on-site restaurant serving continental breakfast each morning and bites starting at 4 p.m. In the morning, guests can head to the main dining room to nosh on breakfast favorites like eggs, crispy potatoes and mushrooms, fresh bruschetta, and fruit-filled smoothies and juices. For an afternoon bite for a full-fledged dinner, The Café is the perfect spot to wind down. Open from 4 to 9 p.m. daily, it has a mouthwatering selection of wood-fired pizzas and charcuterie boards, great for sharing. Grab a glass of wine, beer, or one of their craft cocktails to round out a day in Carmel.

While the accommodations and dining at Stilwell are top-notch, it’s the outdoor spaces that really stand out as one of the hotel’s best features. These areas are designed to be the perfect places to unwind, whether guests are looking to relax on their own or meet new people. The cozy fire pits (usually always lit) are surrounded by comfortable sofas and chairs that are hard not to sink into. Tables and chairs with white umbrellas are dotted around the courtyard, and warm, glowing lights sway in the wind overhead. The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting, with ivy creeping up the walls and a large, soothing fountain in the back creating an intimate, peaceful vibe. Whether enjoying breakfast in the morning, reading a book in the afternoon, or chatting with other guests in the evening, these outdoor spots make Stilwell feel much more like home.

Overall, Stilwell Hotel nails the vibe of Carmel-by-the-Sea: It’s chic and upscale, yet relaxed and welcoming. With pretty rooms, great outdoor spaces, and helpful service, it fits right in with the town’s easygoing atmosphere. Whether here for a weekend getaway or a longer adventure, Stilwell is a fabulous spot to enjoy everything Carmel and the California coast have to offer.
