The 9 Best Cocktail Bars in Amsterdam

Known for its extensive network of canals, incredible museums, and lively nightlife scene, Amsterdam is one of Europe’s most beloved destinations. And, in recent years, the Dutch capital has become a hotspot for cocktail enthusiasts, boasting an array of bars that cater to every spirit aficionado. From hidden speakeasies to sleek, modern lounges, the selection of cocktail bars is as unique as the city itself. Complete with places perfect for tourists, well-seasoned mixologists, and everything in between, these are the best bars in Amsterdam.

Flying Dutchmen Cocktails

Owned by renowned bartenders Tess Posthumus and Timo Janse, Flying Dutchmen Cocktails is one of the hottest spots in the city. With a focus on (neo-)classic cocktails, this bar features the largest backbar in the Netherlands, housing over 800 unique spirits. The menu features a huge selection of drinks, including the fan-favorite Flying Dutchmen Cocktail (their signature cocktail inspired by the Netherlands) as well as craft espresso martinis, Yacht Club Punch, and so much more. The best part? It’s open seven days a week from 5 pm to 4 am, making it the latest cocktail bar in Amsterdam.

Door 74

Previously led by Tess Posthumus and Timo Janse (now owners of Flying Dutchmen Cocktails), Door 74 opened in 2008, making it one of the first speakeasy bars in Western Europe. Here, guests will find innovative cocktails paired with a sexy, sophisticated atmosphere. Read: This is the kind to take a date to if you really want to impress them.

Hiding in Plain Sight

Don’t be surprised if you can’t find this spot on the first try. Hiding in Plain Sight is true to its name, making it a spot that’s really only known by locals. However, it’s worth the hunt because the quality of the cocktails is first rate as is the service. The vibe is dark and cozy, making it a great spot to end a night. Trust us, any cocktail connoisseur will love it here.

Pulitzer’s Bar

Pulitzer’s Bar, located within the Pulitzer Amsterdam, is an elegant hotel bar that blends old-school charm with contemporary touches. Plush leather armchairs, rich wood accents, and moody lighting invite guests to unwind after a day of exploring. Plus, large windows overlook winding canals, offering a beautiful backdrop to any cocktail hour. The menu features a wide range of cocktails–some tropical fruity flavors while others are more herbal and bitter or nutty and rich. There’s something here for everyone.

Freddy’s Bar

Aptly named, Freddy’s Bar is a gentleman’s pub named after Alfred “Freddy” Heineken, who used to spend time here. It has a laid-back vibe and is open for walk-ins (no reservations can be made), making it a place where both locals and visitors can drop by. On the menu, expect to find everything from cold Heinekens and crisp wine to both traditional and experimental cocktails. The best part? Freddy’s has live jazz every night.

One of Amsterdam’s most established cocktail bars, Vesper Bar is known for its high-quality cocktails and skilled team. Jules Bayuni, a hospitality expert, runs the show here, focusing on a mindful approach to creating delicious and innovative drinks. Smooth, spicy, and spirit-forward drinks fill the menu, giving visitors options to try anything they please.

Rosalia’s Menagerie

Rosalia’s Menagerie is located in Rosalia’s Inn Upstairs, a quaint hotel on one of Amsterdam’s oldest canals. The bar is rustic and kitschy, featuring tons of framed photos and artwork alongside cozy seating and small tables. Enjoy a menu that changes seasonally, yet always consists of vibrant, flavorful sips.

Bar Oldenhof

An old-fashioned, high-end bar in the heart of Amsterdam, Bar Oldenhof is a true staple. It offers everything from house signature cocktails and premium spirits to wines and craft beers as well as delicious bar food. Once inside, guests can enjoy a cozy, relaxed space with velvet and wood furnishings, channeling the feel of a place where Ernest Hemingway and Humphrey Bogart would spend time. Complete with live jazz and good vibes, this spot should not be missed.

Tales & Spirits

A lively place located on a small street, Tales & Spirits is a cocktail bar and restaurant that serves incredible drinks and amazing food. The old-timey atmosphere makes this spot feel like a trip back in time (especially after a few drinks). The menu is full of house specials, including fresh-squeezed fruit drinks and stiff, dryer options. In terms of food, nosh on a selection of tasty bites, including everything from ceviche to fresh veggie dishes.
