Stay Like Royalty at the Queen’s Favorite Hotel

London has a world-class hotel scene. With everything from spendy stalwarts to more affordable boutique stays in Shoreditch, travelers have plenty of options. Those looking for a prestigious property with pedigree and service (ahem, the fleet of footmen dressed in red tailcoats) befitting of royalty needn’t look further than The Goring. Located in Belgravia, a short walk from Buckingham Palace, the polished favorite of Queen Elizabeth II is the only hotel to receive a Royal Warrant for hospitality. It also plays host to important historical events such as meetings between Winston Churchill and allied leaders during World War II.

The story of this regal respite dates back to 1910. Built by Otto Goring, The Goring is widely believed to be the first hotel in the world to have both central heating and en-suite bathrooms in every room. Its status as a bastion of luxury continues more than a century later.

At this five-star, family-run landmark, “formality” is not a dirty word. In a time when ripped jeans and tee shirts have become the norm, The Goring maintains the highest standard of decorum and dress. Don’t get us wrong, there’s plenty of whimsy to be found (the mascot is a giant, fluffy sheep, after all) but it’s a decidedly posh affair. Expect fancy not overly fussy.

Design is appropriately decadent for such an institution. The Front Hall shows off hand-painted wallpaper by Fromental and marble floors. (Keep an eye peeled for the cheeky winks at the Goring family such as monkey on horseback and fully jeweled walruses.)

Rooms radiate classic warmth and refinement with custom furnishings and marble bathrooms. Soaking tubs and heated floors are a nice touch. If budget allows, splurge on a suite. The property possesses an impeccable collection of crown-jewel respites decorated by renowned British designers—including The Royal Suite, where Kate Middleton stayed the night before her wedding to Prince William.

One of the most beautiful, opulent spaces in all of London, The Dining Room, re-designed by Russell Sage, flaunts hand-woven Gainsborough silks, walls adorned with green florals, glimmering chandeliers, and gilded flourishes. From a culinary perspective, the Michelin-starred restaurant is a place for savoring exquisite cuisine, quaffing bubbly (or whatever bevy you prefer), and engaging in polite conversation. The lobster and eggs was a favorite of the Queen—non-crown-wearers can still indulge in the delectable breakfast dish. For dinner, opt for a coursed experience with wine pairings selected by the ace sommelier.

When it comes time for afternoon tea, the popular British pastime (which The Goring helped bring back into fashion, is best enjoyed in The Veranda or on the terrace. For something a bit stronger—perhaps a classic G&T, perfectly mixed Earl Grey martini, or a signature BLT (Baroness Lady Thatcher) cocktail—post up at the atmospheric bar where the resident pianist tickles the ivories to the delight of well-served patrons. The verdant garden—among the largest green spaces of its kind at any hotel in the capital—is a lovely place to sit and sip in the warmer months.
