The Hoxton, Downtown LA, is nothing short of fabulous.
The hotel, which is located at 1060 S Broadway, is marked by its retro undertones. Its muted yet rich decor palette, with mauve, tan, and forest green accents, is very aesthetically pleasing.
The 174-room property where luxury meets comfort opened just half a decade ago in 2019 but has a long history. The Beaux Arts building is more than a century old. It first stood complete in 1922—and it didn’t start off as a hotel. It was initially the Los Angeles Railway Building, housing the L.A. Railway Authority. It was also occupied by a candy shop and a garment manufacturer, among others.
Guest rooms are comfortable, and outfitted with cloud-like beds that are hard to leave at the prompting of an alarm clock. The hotel features four styles of guest rooms, ranging in size. The “Cosy Queen” is a 200-square-foot room, the “Cosy King” bumps up to 230 square feet, the “Roomy Room” is 260 square feet, and the “Big Room” is 300 square feet.
According to The Hoxton, the bedroom design was inspired by the hotel’s Beaux Arts architecture. The surrounding area also served as a point of influence. There are nods to French principles with wall paneling details, burl timber, and chevron floors, and also to Mexico with patterned rugs and handmade tiling in the bathroom.
Other features, like plush seating in guest rooms and communal spaces, add an inviting touch to the hotel’s vibe. Sinking into a seat in the lobby area for a cup of coffee would be ideal on a weekend or weekday morning. The decor is purposeful, adding a throwback thread with Marshall radios, retro telephones, and more.
While it would be satisfying to settle into any of the guest rooms for the duration of one’s LA stay, the hotel is home to two restaurant options worth leaving the comfort of The Hoxton’s comfortable rooms for.
Cabra Los Angeles is located on The Hoxton’s rooftop and offers a menu inspired by Peruvian cuisine. Cabra is headed up by Chef Stephanie Izard and partners Kevin Boehm and Rob Katz of Boka Restaurant Group. Cabra also has a location perched on the rooftop of The Hoxton, Chicago.
Moonlark’s Dinette, meanwhile, is located near The Hoxton’s lobby at ground level. The restaurant serves diner fare from dawn through late night. Breakfast is delicious at Moonlark’s. We particularly loved the Green Juice and the Biscuit Sandwich.
There is also an adorable coffee counter on the ground floor.
The hotel also boasts a vibey rooftop pool decorated with hanging plants, an excellent city view, and a brilliant playlist that pumps through the space throughout the day for visitors who may come up to enjoy the skyline, hang on cushy lounge furniture, and swim. The pool is heated.
Downtown Los Angeles sets a nice backdrop for The Hoxton. The hotel isn’t too far from Little Tokyo, the Arts District, and plenty of dining options, along with galleries and the like. The hotel is within walking distance of several fitness studios, too. Though there isn’t a gym on the property, The Hoxton has partnered with neighboring John Reed Fitness to give guests the option to purchase an all-class, all-day pass for $25. The gym is a 4-minute walk from the hotel.
The Hoxton, Downtown Los Angeles, is a great home base for any trip to the California hotspot. We’ll definitely plan to return.
