The Manner in Soho Is Lower Manhattan’s Hottest New Hotel

Tucked amidst the tree-lined Thompson Street in the heart of Soho, one may stroll right past The Manner without even noticing you’ve just walked past one of Manhattan’s coolest new boutique hotels. However, as you approach the front entrance, a well-dressed doorman guides you inside to the front desk, and you immediately feel the unmistakable sense of luxury that awaits.

Since its opening by The Standard Hotel team in late September, this stylish haunt has quickly become the talk of New York City’s hospitality scene. Whispers spread about the refined guest house, and friends ask, “Have you been to The Manner yet?” After hosting a star-studded fashion week soirée with guests like Madonna, Addison Rae, and Charles Melton for Coach and Off-White, its coveted status only grew.

While checking in, the soothing sounds of a fountain create a spa-like ambiance, enveloping you in calm. Your attention is drawn to a stunning crystal chandelier cascading from the vaulted ceiling, which illuminates the staircase that leads to The Apartment—an open-layout, living room-esque area serving as the main lobby above the foyer. Sunken leather midcentury-modern couches, gold-lacquered tables, and coffee table books invite you to settle in and relax, making the space feel like your own lounge—one where you wouldn’t mind waiting for hours.

Its 97 guest rooms—including 10 suites and one penthouse—sprawl across the 12-story structure. Interiorly, the retro essence of the 1970s blends seamlessly with contemporary maritime trappings, including a porthole-style lavatory door and glossy dark wood finishes. Aesthetics such as tangerine-hued walls, floor-to-ceiling mirrors, and jewel-toned velvet upholstery—think emerald green, ruby red, and sapphire blue—are beautifully complemented by Milan-based architect Hannes Peer’s signature gold leaf accents and elegant light fixtures.

Earthen brown-marbled rain showers invite you to indulge in Costa Brazil’s elegantly scented bath essentials before slipping into Lenys World Italian-crafted slippers and a plush, towel-textured robe. Private balconies overlooking the Empire State Building and iconic cityscape may tempt you to linger, but the no-TV rule in the rooms encourages you to venture out. Afterward, head downstairs for dinner and drinks.

Sloane’s cocktail club, which quietly sits behind The Apartment, exudes subtlety and truly makes you feel like a VIP. Intimate, candle-lit corners and a gleaming, recessed bar anchor the space, while a secluded selection of olive green-hued seating towards the back adds a seductive touch. The libation list embodies classic New York, complete with a $24 price tag that matches its swanky atmosphere.

While the Dirty Martini catches your eye with its London Dry Gin and an intriguing sherry vermouth twist, it’s the unexpected star of the evening that will win you over: the Paper Plane—a mezcal creation mixed with apéritif, amaro, passionfruit, and lime. Paired with their sesame seed-coated stuffed olives from the “Small Bites” menu, your appetite will be perfectly primed for dinner downstairs.

You’ll slink down to The Otter, where you’ll first notice the blue-pleated fabric and mural-painted walls, giving the restaurant a quintessential Soho vibe. Acclaimed Chef Alex Stupak leads a menu that celebrates New England cooking. Think seafood-forward dishes like Scallop Crudo, Tuna Tartare, and a decadent Lobster Roll seasoned with the chef’s secret spice blend. Innovative pastas, such as Fettuccine with matsutake mushrooms and kelp, are worth adding to your order, but the must-try entrée is the Swordfish Steak Frites, Au Poivre (pepper-crusted, for those who need the translation).

Dinner at The Otter wraps up with final bites, and Sloane’s caps off nightcaps at a reasonable 2 a.m. on weekends—midnight on weekdays—gently ushering guests back to their sleek quarters. As the night winds down, you begin to doze off under sumptuous sheets, reflecting on how your day at Soho’s chicest new boutique stay felt more like visiting a stylish friend’s New York home than being in a hotel.
