With spring capturing our thoughts and the anticipation of leisurely summer days filled with cocktails and al fresco dining growing stronger, we’re compiling a roster of restaurants that let us bask in the sunlight while indulging in delicious meals. At the top of our list is Celestine—an elegantly styled Mediterranean-inspired waterfront restaurant in DUMBO with unparalleled views.
Perched along the East River beneath the Manhattan Bridge, the establishment automatically gives way to unobstructed views of the New York City skyline and iconic bridges. A sophisticated, earth-toned atmosphere is enhanced by verdant foliage cascading from open shelves along the walls, vibrant flowers adorning dining tables, and expansive floor-to-ceiling windows that showcase the twinkling cityscape and abundant natural light streaming into the space.
When a restaurant excels in the design department, it’s hard to tell if it can deliver in the food & drink realm; however, Celestine surpasses expectations. Offering seasonal Eastern Mediterranean cuisine, the menu perfectly mirrors its airy ambiance by highlighting dishes that satisfy you without feeling excessively full.
Before delving into the culinary scene, we naturally start our experience with a delightful cocktail. Refreshing libations like the Lemon Grab—comprising dry gin, Sicilian lemon soda, Averna, and fresh lemon juice—and the Orange Skies—mixed with mezcal, apricot, Contratto Aperitif, dry vermouth—transport you to the euphoric feeling of basking in the sun by the Mediterranean Sea with a drink in hand. A comprehensive wine and beer list, along with spirit-free cocktails, are available to cater to your preferences. (The Chamomile Cooler and Phony Negroni caught our attention.)
Commencing the meal with the Mezze Platter allows guests to dip into (literally) all four mezzes, featuring Pistachio Feta, White Bean Hummus, Labneh, and Crudite spreads accompanied by warm, olive oil-painted flatbread. The Little Gem Lettuce salad spotlights the restaurant’s utilization of local produce and adds a necessary touch of greenery to the meal. As for the main course, the Spicy Rigatoni—made with jumbo lump crab, Calabrian chili butter, and ‘nduja bread crumbs—is not to be missed. Additionally, the Lamb Skewers and the NY Strip Streak stand as formidable contenders in the province of delectable dishes.
Whether you’re seeking a laid-back brunch to enjoy the nice weather or planning a special occasion outing, securing a table at Celestine is a stress-free process and offers an outstanding dining experience. (And did we mention the photo-worthy backdrop enough?)
