A Historic Route 66 Motel in Flagstaff Gets a Makeover

Located between the Grand Canyon and Barringer Crater, the High Country Motor Lodge is the perfect reprieve along America’s most historic highway, Route 66. Originally, the 123-room property was built as a classic roadside motel but recently underwent a massive renovation intended to highlight the beauty and culture of Flagstaff and Route 66.

Rustic elements, retro touches, and contemporary accents showcase a nod to classic Americana, providing a spot that feels as secluded as a mountain lodge with the modern look and comfort of an inviting hotel.

Within the hotel’s lobby is The General Store, a culinary spot offering everything from grab-and-go meals for outdoor pursuits to freshly cooked pizzas, specialty cocktails, and coffee drinks available for onsite dining in the restaurant itself. Nearby, a game room with shuffleboard, pool, and board games is a great place to enjoy some old-fashioned fun after a busy day.

During their stay at the property, guests can partake in some of the onsite programming, including movie nights, stargazing with a custom guide, and live music. Arizona’s first Nordic Spa Experience with private saunas, plunge pools, cold showers, and more, is also located onsite. Plus, the hotel boasts the largest pool in Northern Arizona, which is next to a large communal lawn and oversized outdoor deck area with fire pits.

With raw wood materials, vintage-inspired colors and fabrics, and nostalgic elements shown throughout the property, all guestrooms are designed purposely for the environment with extra room for outdoor pursuits such as hiking, skiing, or backpacking built into the space. Other accommodations include two Junior Suites and three Cosmic Cottages, which provide the perfect spacious private sanctuary.
