When Southern Californians need their snow fix, they head to Big Bear Lake: A small alpine resort town in the San Bernardino Mountains. From the ski slopes of Big Bear Mountain Resort and Snow Summit to the area’s picturesque eponymous lake, this micro-mountain village needed a luxe boutique hotel — and that’s where Noble + Proper comes into the picture.
Fashioned by husband and wife duo, Sara and Sven Simon, the curated collection of eight refurbished cabins recently made its grand debut as the first design-forward lodging experience in the area. Each cottage boasts a distinct mountaineer design and is named after the couple’s beloved family members: Fran’s Flat, Lucille’s Manor, and Otto’s Chalet, to name a few.
Ideal for group trips, the lodge’s range from two to four bed-and-baths, with the largest cabin, Orville’s Lodge, sleeping up to 14 guests at a time. Spanning over 3,000 square feet, this is Noble + Proper’s crème de la crème chalet that sports all the luxe amenities included in the other seven cabins — fully-equipped kitchens, gas fireplaces, posh bed linens, and complimentary coffee — as well as a few other bells and whistles: A game room with foosball and shuffleboard sets, and an outdoor deck featuring an inviting cedar hot tub and picnic table for dinner under the pines.
Interiorly, public spaces are dressed in checker-tiled flooring, floral- and leaf-printed wallpapers, plus vintage portraits, adding an eccentric feel to each cabin. Guestrooms feature plush queen-sized beds backdropped by upholstered headboards swathed in various colors, from punchy reds to subtle greens; contemporary light fixtures; and walls slathered in brickyard motifs, orange, green, and blush pink, among other tones.
Relaxing after a day’s worth of exploring the outdoors can be spent one of two ways: Snuggling up to the living room fireplace on the cozy leather couches with a movie on in the background or grilling dinner on the outdoor patio barbecue — after, opt for either a game of horseshoe or you-time hunkered in the resident hammock. Needless to say, no matter the agenda, the Noble + Proper cabins will feel like your mountain-town home.
Starting rates for these chic mountain pads range from $495 to $1,995/night.
