Budapest’s Newest Hotel Makes a Grand Entrance into Hungary’s Hospitality Scene

When it comes to unveiling a new-age grand dame hotel, the Dorothea Hotel, Autograph Collection in Budapest can give some pointers. The opening party saw every Hungarian celebrity in attendance: an immersive ballet performance by one of the world's most illustrious dance companies captivated guests' attention, singers hit every high note as they belted out song covers, and a uniformed waitstaff passed around fancy bites on shining silver trays.

While the event was one night, the buzz surrounding the hotel's opening continues to this day, especially amongst local hospitality figures.

Occupying three storied buildings—including the neo-renaissance erstwhile United Budapest Metropolitan Savings Bank and the art nouveau-tinged former headquarters of the Hungarian River and Sea Shipping company—in Budapest's lively District V, the hotel's namesake stems from the influential Archduchess Dorothea and her aristocratic contributions to ameliorating the city's economic development.

Crème-de-la-crème Italian architect and designer Piero Lissoni designed the space as a place where rich history rubs shoulders with sheer modernity. In the lobby, a long drop glass chandelier greets guests, alongside a heritage staircase fronting an azure Zsolnay Tile Wall. From the high-ceilinged reception area to the various hallways, Hungarian art and fashion photographer Zoltán Tombor's work adorns walls (think centuries-old portraits of men and women, but with modern elements such as Gen Z-esque glasses).

Guestrooms fit two different design categories: contemporary and heritage. No matter the styling, each has spacious modern amenities (you'll love suites' expansive shower spaces).

The hotel's nucleus is the inner courtyard. It is home to Pavilon Restaurant & Bar, an airy verdant oasis that immerses guests in an urban plant-scape. Chef Carmine di Luggo serves farm-to-table dishes that celebrate Hungary's agricultural bounty.

On the ground floor, Anton's Bar & Deli serves artisanal coffee with light snacks and freshly baked pastries during the day. By night, it transforms into a vibrant bar and community hub with inventive cocktails.

Those looking to unwind can do so at the Dorothea Hotel Spa. Their signature Archduchess treatment is our favorite. Harnessing the power of endemic poppyseeds, it includes a foot ritual, body exfoliation, body dry brushing, body wrap, and facial massage, among other highlights.

All in all, this place knows how to make an entrance into the hospitality world.
