The Ultimate Guide to Planning a California Coastal Highway Road Trip

California’s Highway 1, also known as the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), is the second-longest state route in the United States. This dreamy drive takes road trippers through redwood forests, coastal towns, and major cities. Cruise down the windy roads with breathtaking views of the bluffs and crashing waves.

Make the most out of your road trip by popping off the 1 for delicious eats, sunny beaches, and perfect panoramas. Here’s our guide to our favorite stops in the most famous stretch of the PCH between San Francisco and Los Angeles. This trip can be made in one very long day, or you can take it to a more leisurely pace and spend the night somewhere along the Central Coast.

San Francisco

Start your trip with a delicious breakfast and coffee at Mama’s in San Francisco. This intimate, warm restaurant is a local favorite, offering an innovative menu of sandwiches, salads, and omelets.

For those who want to squeeze in some last-minute tours, this spot is within walking distance from Coit Tower and Washington Square Park. Then, it’s time to buckle up and kick off your West Coast adventure. Or, if you’re planning to stay a bit longer, settle in at one of SF’s top boutique hotels.

Santa Cruz

From San Francisco, you can get to the 1 through Half Moon Bay for an oceanside drive or take the 101 to the 17 to go through redwood trees. Either way, you’ll want to stop in Santa Cruz and grab a coffee at Cafe Delmarette. This cafe is located on the San Lorenzo River and has a roastery and a store. They also serve scones, sandwiches, and treats with the best local ingredients.

Bring your coffee to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, where you can stretch your legs and breathe in some salty ocean air.

Big Sur

Big Sur is a state park that is famous for its dramatic mountains and cliffs, as well as its stunning water. The Bixby Bridge is one of California’s most renowned photo spots, and we won’t judge you for pulling over for a selfie. With views like that, it’s impossible not to.

Stop at the Big Sur River Inn for lunch. This hotel and restaurant has a full menu, but it’s famous for its scenery. Enjoy the shade from the redwoods, take off your shoes, and feel the water on your feet as you snack on seafood and sandwiches.

Or, if you prefer to split your trip into two days, Big Sur is a fantastic place to spend the night. You’ll want more time to walk among the trees and learn about the famous writers inspired by the landscape (including Jack Kerouac!).

San Simeon

If you are taking your road trip in January, April, or October, hop off in San Simeon to watch the hilariously adorable elephant seals at Piedras Blancas Rookery. This site is easily accessible, free, and open to the public. You can get close (but not too close!) and observe the elephant seals as they play, throw sand on each other, and bask in the sunshine.

If you have the time, you can also walk through the stunning Hearst Castle. This art museum showcases old and new works as art in a gorgeous building. You can also spot peacocks and zebras wandering the grounds.

Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara is famous for its stunning beaches and laidback, coastal vibe. Spend the afternoon in the water by renting a paddleboard or kayak, or enjoy seafood with a view at Bluewater Grill.

You can also walk around downtown Santa Barbara to see the Spanish colonial architecture. Thanks to the nearby wine regions of Paso Robles and Santa Ynez, many restaurants have great wine lists

Los Angeles

In Los Angeles, there’s something for everyone. If you are looking for more time by the water, lay on the beach at Will Rogers or watch the surfers at Topanga. You can also head to Hollywood for rooftop drinks at Mama Shelter or Harriett’s Bar.

Foodies will adore exploring Sawtelle, renowned for its thriving Japanese American community and mouthwatering restaurants. For a trendier vibe, head to the Silver Lake neighborhood, known for its eclectic charm.

Enjoy your night in one of Los Angeles’s many boutique hotels with a newfound appreciation for the beauty and diversity of the American West Coast.
