This Athens Hotel Is Ushering in a Stay for The Modern Traveler

Athens is having a moment; a Renaissance, if you will. Gritty and graffitied, Greece’s capital is cooler than ever. With photo-friendly cafes, award-winning cocktail bars and new hotels galore, it’s worth more than just an overnight before heading to the islands.

Opened in 2022, the Moxy Athens City is one of Athen’s newest lodgings. Located on busy Omonia Square, this Marriott Bonvoy member is hard to miss. Two giant black and red French bulldogs usher guest’s into the 201-room hotel that was once home to the city’s courts.

Keeping in line with the nomadic millennial vibe of Moxy, the often busy and buzzing check-in area doubles as a muraled bar, cafe and general hangout area between Athens outings. The ground level also includes a surprisingly spacious multi-story working area with bright colors, whimsical patterns and laptop-friendly seating perfect for solo travelers or group meetings.

Given that it’s a worldwide brand, it’s no surprise that rooms are a bit cookie-cutter, but they’re also contemporary, comfortable and compact. Charcoal tones accented by light timber, pops of color, wacky artwork and matte black finishes decorate each room along with slogans like, “I woke up like this” and “Don’t come a-knockin’.”

But the rooms aren’t just stylish; they’re smart. Guests can control the eco-friendly motorized louvers on the Moxy’s exterior to block the sun and keep the space cool. And making use of every precious inch of space, there are pegs for hanging clothes, a fold-down wall desk, under-sink storage, bedside USB ports and motion-activated LED lights under the bed—basically everything the modern traveler needs.
