This Cozy Culinary Haven in the Catskills Offers Elegant Techniques in Laidback Environs

For decades, city-goers have escaped to the Catskills for holiday getaways, seeking respite from the day-by-day hurry. However, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the region offered refuge for Eastern European immigrants, which solidified its “Borscht Belt” nickname. Subsequently, resorts began popping up, offering adults and their children a series of daily activities akin to summer camp for all ages.

Situated in Big Indian, New York, Urban Cowboy Lodge is one such storied destination. Travelers are often wooed by the iconic standalone, copper clawfoot soaking tubs, and programming such as axe throwing and snow-shoeing, but now there is a new reason to visit: the recent opening of The Dining Room at Urban Cowboy Lodge.

Stepping into The Dining Room, guests immediately notice a shift from the Lodge’s eclectic design to a more elegant, minimalist atmosphere. Hand-printed wallpaper mimicking the surrounding forest sets the stage for tranquility and natural beauty. Steeped in familial tradition, the space echoes the days when generations gathered for daily meals.

What can only be described as “romantic nostalgia” is ascribed to the intentional accents that enhance the ambiance. A wooden hand-painted sign discovered by co-owner Lyon Porter in an Adirondack antique store adorns the entrance. Jono Pandolfi plateware, found flatware, and casual yet refined glassware complete each tablescape. Sleek lines and bespoke quality retain the traditional red and green hues found throughout the property while embodying an “of the earth” ethos.

Drawing inspiration from his diverse culinary journey, renowned Chef Daniel Weiner offers guests a curated menu that skillfully combines Italian and Jewish culinary traditions. Here, guests embark on a culinary adventure, encountering signature dishes like Grilled Challah with pickled onions and schmaltz butter and Duck Breast with arrope––the latter was initially offered solely as a special, but quickly became the most sought-after item.

Weiner’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of traditional cuisine harmonizes a dedication to local sourcing, resulting in a fusion of innovative and familiar flavors that captivate the palate.

Beverage Director Alex Jay’s meticulously crafted cocktail program perfectly complements the culinary options. A seasonal rotation of drinks inspired by the region’s most notable flavors joins perennial favorites like the comforting Hot Toddy and the ever-popular House Margarita infused with Ancho Verde chile liqueur.

The Dining Room at Urban Cowboy Lodge emerges as a celebration of old-world charm and new-world innovation. Chef Weiner’s vision within this historic setting makes this new dining concept a must-visit for those seeking an unforgettable gastronomic journey in the heart of the wilderness.
