When global influences meet our true passions, we find a home away from home. For Matthew Harris of MATEO, that home was Lisbon. He says, “I fell in love with Portugal a decade ago and always have dreamed of moving to Lisbon. COVID happened and I said ‘it’s now or never’. So, after purchasing a home in Lisbon in 2020, the city has officially become a place I call home. It was only right to also have a home for my jewelry as well.”
MATEO New York just landed in Lisbon, Portugal as the designer’s first store in Europe.
Matthew Harris, the world-renowned fine jewelry designer, was born and raised in Montego Bay, Jamaica before moving to the US at the age of 16 and eventually launching a fine jewelry line, MATEO, in New York. MATEO has celebrity fans like Rihanna and Zendaya, and presence in the African American Museum of Art and Culture in Washington D.C. and the Hirshhorn Museum of Contemporary Art.
MATEO crafts modern, wearable art with 14K gold, gemstones, and pearls. Through a range of price points, his collections offer something for everyone–from expertly crafted solid gold water droplets to resort-ready beads and gemstones. MATEO’s Lisbon store also features women’s and men’s fine jewelry, accessories, fragrances, and more.
The boutique was designed by Matthew, fueled by his passion for design. The space is an extension of his homes in Houston and Lisbon, respecting the Portuguese heritage of craftsmanship. It too is a home away from home. Think: 18th and 19th Century Portuguese furniture, hand painted tiles (azulejo), antique chandeliers, and Brazilian furniture from Jader Almeida. Each room in the space is unique but cohesive, reflective of the brand’s aesthetic simplicity. The boutique features a Living Room, Salon, and Mezzanine. From the Mezzanine, where you can browse highly sophisticated pieces, there’s a view of Jardim França Borges.
