Meet The Ranch at Laguna Beach: A 97-Room Hotel in a Coastal Canyon with Serious Sustainability Cred

The allure of Laguna Beach—a laid-back yet high-end Southern California enclave—is undeniable. With its low-key surf culture, ocean-facing homes tucked along the canyon, and expansive sandy shores, it’s easy to see why this sun-soaked paradise captivates so many.

While most hotels cling to oceanfront land, The Ranch at Laguna Beach unveils a different side of the region’s beauty. Nestled between the steep walls of Aliso and Wood Canyons, this coastal ranch celebrates SoCal’s dynamic terrain—where rolling hills seamlessly meet the Pacific.

As you veer sharply off Highway 1, a winding path leads into a hidden haven. The 87-acre property unfolds before you: dark brown-brushed cottages tucked into the verdant ravine, 97 thoughtfully designed guestrooms, a 9-hole golf course, and a half-acre biodynamic farm, all surrounded by nature’s grandeur.

Recognized as a member of Beyond Green, a global portfolio of hotels, resorts, and lodges paving the way in sustainable tourism, The Ranch’s commitment to sustainability extends far beyond its farm-to-fork eatery for guests. From the towering eucalyptus trees George and Sarah Thurston planted on their family ranch in 1879 to an innovative glass compactor that recycles bottles into sand for golf bunkers, eco-conscious practices are woven into daily operations. The resident farmer, Leo, manages composting on the Harvest Farm, diverting 20,000 pounds of food waste from landfills annually to support soil renewal and organic chicken feed.

Tuvalu Home Designs crafted the interiors to capture Laguna’s relaxed yet luxurious essence perfectly. Guest spaces exude a rustic-modern charm reminiscent of a refurbished farmhouse, with copper lighting, chocolate leather seating, and crisp white-painted barn walls. A natural, coastal-inspired palette of sea greens, ocean blues, and earthy browns ties it all together, blending the two landscapes from the inside out. Luxe bathrooms offer Malin + Goetz toiletries, biodegradable toothbrushes, and Huppy toothpaste tablets, reflecting the lodge’s eco-conscious values.

Perched on the hillside, the Treehouse is a luxurious two-story, 1,600-square-foot residence and the property’s crown jewel. It boasts a private entrance, two bedrooms, three bathrooms—including a master suite and guest bedroom—a fully equipped kitchen with glass china, cookware, silverware, and an espresso machine, plus a wraparound deck with a picturesque golf course and canyon vistas.

When hunger strikes, three on-site dining options await: Harvest, the farm-to-table main restaurant and bar; The Porch, an alfresco café with firepits and lounge seating; and the Palapa Bar, a poolside spot for drinks and snacks, set around the heated saline lido and hot tub.

At the modern ranch-style Harvest, the rotating menu reimagines California comfort food classics with an elevated touch. A vibrant, members-only ambiance makes diners feel like they’re at an exclusive, locals-only country club. Fresh produce from the on-site garden ensures every dish is as flavorful as the setting. Our exceptional server, Frank, guided us perfectly, recommending must-try dishes like the House Focaccia Bread—baked with rosemary, aged Parmesan, olive tapenade, and served with whipped butter—and the Red Wine Braised Short Rib, paired with parsnip purée, roasted heirloom carrots, and a rich house red wine sauce.

While you should undoubtedly take advantage of the lodge’s prime location at Aliso Beach, plenty can fill your days without leaving the property. Begin your morning with a gym workout equipped with treadmills, weights, and modern gear. The space feels private, with wraparound windows that let in the refreshing Southern California breeze and sunshine.

Afterward, enjoy a game of beach volleyball on the sand courts or lounge poolside in the green-and-white striped chaise lounges framing the inviting water. To end your day on a relaxing note, visit the soothing Sycamore Spa. Treat yourself to the Calming Canyon Massage to release muscle tension, or opt for the Beach Recovery Body Treatment, which includes a seaweed facial mask, a tea tree and coconut oil scalp massage, and a foot exfoliation.
