It’s not a status suitcase–it’s a statement one. Floyd’s unmistakable skateboard-style red wheels and orange-lining exude self-confidence. There’s a contagious positive energy that they bring to even the most mundane airports. Bernd Georgi and Horst Kern founded Floyd together in 2019 to bring pleasure back to traveling. Now, the brand brings the spirit of 1970s Southern California skater culture to globetrotters and jetsetters worldwide.
“They’re for people who dare to use colorful pieces. They love freedom and style.”
– Bernd Georgi, Co-Founder of Floyd
Originally finding hardcase luggage uncool, Bernd, Floyd’s Co-Founder, carried canvas bags for years before designing a series of cases that merged the style influences of the ‘70s with the technological innovation of the 21st century. But Floyd didn’t just introduce a line of cool statement suitcases–the brand set the new standard for what makes a great one. As a travel enthusiast who loves city trips, boutique stays like the Venice Hotel and kitesurfing adventures from Maui to Lanai to Wahoo, Bernd Georgi is the ultimate suitcase expert. Together with his co-founder Horst Kern, they’re giving our editors the inside scoop on the five must-haves in a great suitcase. Our editors look for:
- Durability
- Sustainability
- Speed & 360 Degree Mobility
- Sound
- Style
Here, we asked Bernd what makes a great–and cool–suitcase. He answers with a smile rocking a ’70s-era belt and fur-lined jacket. Behind his desk and Floyd prototype sits a classic Honda motorcycle, a collection of vintage skateboards, and an array of classic theater posters.
What makes a great suitcase?
“For Floyd, they all have:
- A unique look
- Top quality craftsmanship
- Exchangeable, smooth rolling wheels
- An easy-to-handle design
- Style versatility and a bold assortment of colors”
What makes Floyd’s wheels different?
“They feature interchangeable skateboard wheels.
The sturdy wheels are inspired by the iconic red polyurethane wheels of skateboards, known from Venice Beach and half pipes around the world. Like the cases, the smooth-running wheels come in a variety of colors, transforming each trolley into a quietly gliding, unique piece.”
The interior of a Floyd suitcase is unique too. Tell us what’s special about it.
“They feature thoughtful interior compartments.
Imagine the admiration of fellow travelers as you open your Floyd like a standing wardrobe trunk to effortlessly retrieve items from its two zippered sections or your laptop from the additional storage compartment. Its vibrant orange lining is made of high-quality recycled Polysatin in Oeko-Tex® Standard and each Floyd also comes with a complimentary dust bag.”
Where does “Floyd” get its name?
“Growing up I loved Pink Floyd and the hit track Wish You Were Here. We also just love the name and how Floyd plays off of the word flight.”
What’s Next for Floyd?
“In the immediate future, we’ll be launching new soft luggage pieces and molded aluminum cases too. With such a strong Floyd community we’re building, there’s no limit to what’s in store. Perhaps one day we’ll also open a hotel or unveil a Floyd airplane…”
