This Stylish Hotel Set Inside an 18th-Century Residence Honors Parisian History in a Cool, Contemporary Way

Occupying an 18th-century residence built by architect Nicolas d’Orbay for Etienne Rivié, a French diplomat and counselor to Louis XV, in the dynamic Sentier neighborhood, The Hoxton, Paris exudes a seductive, effortlessly cool quality. It doesn’t follow the overly romantic or bourgeois script of so many other hotels in Paris. Instead, it curates a character-rich style that’s an erudite interplay of past and present. The history of the building is palpable, but the property still feels youthful and exuberant.

Original staircase Rivie

The Hoxton, Paris has mastered the art of communal areas, creating places insouciant Parisians and international visitors desire to spend time. Rather than entering directly into the reception, guests step into the lobby/café complete with a soaring glass atrium ceiling that streams in natural light, lots of lush plants, and a magnificent 300-year-old spiral staircase. The front courtyard is a lively spot to have a drink or catch up with friends. While the atmospheric back courtyard emits a more relaxed vibe with lounge seating, yuzu plants, and a pétanque court.

Rivié

The chic all-day restaurant Rivié captures the essence of a classic French brasserie but does so in a modern way. Menu highlights include sesame tuna carpaccio and Moules frites with XO sauce. Planche is a cozy wine bar that pours biodynamic and organic vin from around the world and plates Spanish tapas like pan con tomate and charcuterie. The walls at Jacques’ Bar are plastered with floral wallpaper that looks like it could just as easily be fabric wrapped around some lithe model on the catwalk at Paris Fashion Week. Wood paneling and curved velvet couches and poufs in tones of golden mustard and pink infuse even more dimension into the intimate space.

Bedroom Houxton

When it’s time to call it a night, a comfy chamber awaits. Rooms, which range in size from Shoebox to Biggy, honor significant periods in Parisian history through the meshing of reclaimed oak chevron floors, decorative cornicing, mid-century light fixtures, and contemporary tiled bathrooms. There are also unique rooftop digs with spiral staircases and sun terraces overlooking the central courtyard.
