HAP Founder Brandon Berkson here: As you may remember, last month I shared my favorite magazines with all of you. Within that post, I also talked about how I would start writing about my personal picks within the travel sphere once a month. Well, friends, it’s September and I’ve got three new picks for you!
Blueprinted by world-renowned Interior Designer Ken Fulk, this coffee shop in New York City’s SoHo neighborhood boasts an eye-catching décor that oozes refinement. I’m always drinking coffee and am obsessed with the fact that, when it comes to their beans, they follow a buying calendar that is in sync with the harvest of each of their growing partners and estates.
San Diego is my hometown and recently got cool. Very cool. Yes, “America’s Finest City” is known for its pristine beaches but heed my advice on your next trip: Consider sacrificing hours on the sand to spend time in San Diego’s urbane areas such as North Park, Hillcrest, and my personal favorite, Little Italy. European-style cafes with expansive front patios, trendsetting bars, and chic restaurants line the neighborhood’s main drag, India Street: Caffé Italia serves fantastic cappuccinos, best enjoyed in their charming courtyard; Born & Raised plus Cloak & Petal host a captivating interior design, buzzy bar, as well as delectable cocktails; 68-year-old, local-institution Filippi’s Pizza Grotto sells cheesy pies galore; and, lastly, sweet tooth Holy Paleta satisfies sweet tooths with its creative popsicle assemblage (get the s’mores one). Then, when you’re full, walk a few blocks to the city’s idyllic marina and Waterfront Park.
XD Design is a super cool Dutch brand that makes hip, sustainable backpacks. I just purchased the XD Design Bobby Pro Anti-Theft Backpack and am SO INTO IT. Yours truly has been pick-pocketed before and it’s not fun—if I had this backpack, I’m almost positive it wouldn’t have happened due to its design that employs hidden zippers and cut-resistant material.
