I Stayed in a Hotel, Here’s What You Need to Know

Hotels Above Par Editor, Lauren Dana here: After over six (!) months of quarantining, social distancing, and mask-wearing, I made the decision to embark on a weekend getaway at — gasp! — a luxe, all-inclusive resort. At first, I wasn’t sure what to expect: Would there be daily housekeeping? Will there be extra face masks available in case mine breaks? How would the property ensure other guests were taking necessary precautions?

If you, too, are considering staying at a hotel anytime soon, here’s what you need to know.

1️⃣ Don’t Expect Daily Housekeeping: The property I stayed at Miraval Berkshires (@miravalresorts) only offered daily housekeeping upon request (this helps to limit unnecessary contact and prevent contamination). And, after doing some research, this seems to be the new norm amongst hotels across the country.

2️⃣ Carry An Extra Mask With You At All Times: Fortunately, they had extra face masks on hand for guests who needed them. However, not all properties do this — so you’ll want to come prepared in case yours breaks (it happened to me by the pool) or gets misplaced. The moral of the story? You should have at least two masks at all times.

3️⃣ Take Advantage of Room Service (If Offered): If you’re nervous about dining with other guests (after all, you do have to take your masks off to eat), keep it simple, order room service, and enjoy an elaborate feast from the comfort of your guest room. Plus, who doesn’t love an incredible room service spread?!

Hotels need our love now more than ever, which is why it’s so important to support them amidst these uncertain times. Even if you don’t feel comfortable sleeping in a hotel right now, you can book a stay farther out in the future. Plus, many properties have since amended their cancelation policies, so, even if you do decide to cancel your reservation, there’s a good chance you won’t get penalized.
