3 East Coast Destinations That Are Better in Winter Than Summer

The weather outside (may be) frightful, but travel inspiration awaits (of course, whenever you feel comfortable taking a regional trip again in the future). From a beautiful mountain retreat in North Carolina to a beachfront escape in Florida to an urban staycation in Massachusetts, we’ve rounded up our favorite East Coast destinations that are even better in winter than they are in the summer:

1️⃣ Asheville, NC: The city is best known for its craft breweries and beautiful hiking spots, but it’s also dotted with incredible dining options, eclectic galleries, and chic boutiques. It’s even more magical in the winter when the mountains are covered in a blanket of snow. Make sure to check out @biltmoreestate, a historic mansion that’s redolent of architectural styles during America’s Gilded Age. (picture #1)

Where to Stay: The design-forward Foundry Hotel (@thefoundryhotel) is housed in a former steel foundry — hence the name — and boasts 87 elegantly appointed rooms and suites.

2️⃣ Key West, FL: Escape the cold with a trip to Key West, where you’ll find beautiful beaches, tons of history, and, of course, plenty of culture. Go snorkeling, visit the @hemingwayhomemuseum and top off your night with some drinking and dining on Duvall Street. (picture #2)

Where to Stay: With close proximity to the Ernest Hemingway Home, travelers should check out the boutique-chic Lighthouse Hotel (one of the five properties that make up Kimpton Key West Lighthouse Hotel (@kimptonkeywest).

3️⃣ Boston, MA: Beantown offers something for everyone — from the sprawling Charles River Esplanade (where you can people-watch, bike, or boat) to chic Newbury Street (lined with upscale shops and eateries). Come wintertime, the snowy city is teeming with vibrancy — just make sure to fuel up on some (spiked) hot cocoa. (picture #3)

Where to Stay: Located atop Beacon Hill, the XV Beacon (@xvbeacon) is the place to see and be seen in Boston — and the in-room fireplaces are just the icing on the cake.

If you do decide to travel, be sure to do it responsibly and look up current guidelines in each destination before making any decisions.
