Where to Visit in March

Putting January and February behind us, let’s talk about March: Spring officially commences at the end of the month, which means the weather is changing for the better, and an essential spring break trip is among us. This said, here are five destinations and boutique hotels we see fit for a March vacation.

Dublin, Ireland

Dublin, the capital and largest city in Ireland, is the premier destination of the Emerald Isle. This historic city epitomizes the look of a charming European town with its cobblestone streets, old-age hole-in-the-wall pubs, and storied monuments, including the 13th-century Dublin Castle and, of course, the imposing St. Patricks Cathedral. Take in the city’s medieval architecture while strolling down the flat, walkable thoroughfares as you search for your prime Guinness sipping spot.

Why visit in March? If you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, there’s no better place to spend the holiday than at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the city’s center.

Where to stay: Playing a vital role in Ireland’s history, The Shelbourne, Autograph Collection is an iconic hotel remarked as “Ireland’s living room” for hosting the declaration of the Irish Constitution. Elegantly styled guestrooms feature crystal chandeliers, Egyptian cotton bed linens, and sweeping views of the famed St. Stephen’s Green. Booking afternoon tea at The Shelbourne, Autograph Collection’s grand Lord Mayor’s Lounge is highly recommended before slinking over to its in-demand watering hole, No. 27 The Shelbourne Bar.

Riviera Maya, Mexico

Stretched over the Caribbean coastline on Mexico’s northern Yucatán Peninsula, Riviera Maya boasts lush tropical terrain and beautiful white sand beaches lined with the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. Mayan Ruins and ancient cenotes dot this stretch of land and the sought-after spring break destination.

Why visit in March? Spring in the Riviera Maya brings warm temperatures and clear skies that will rid visitors of any wintertime blues.

Where to stay: Etéreo, Auberge Resorts Collection is a luxurious beachfront resort steps from the pristine Caribbean Sea. The 75-key stay provides expansive studio-style guestrooms and suites accented with modern Mayan-inspired textiles, plush furnishings, private plunge pools, and floor-to-ceiling windows giving way to sweeping tropical forests and ocean views. Exploring nearby Mayan Ruins and cenotes of the Riviera Maya are all accessible from the resort.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Fronting the Adriatic Sea in southern Croatia, Dubrovnik is a remarkable European city that attracts tourists worldwide. Its renowned Old Town boasts preserved 16th-century medieval fortress walls that are a sight to behold. Travelers should head to Stratdun — Old Town Dubrovnik’s limestone-paved main thoroughfare — for the day and stroll up and down this main drag replete with cafes, shops, and historic sites.

Why visit in March? Before the peak of tourist season, frequent all the main spots sans queues and crowds.

Where to stay: Sitting just steps away from the UNESCO Old City of Dubrovnik, Hotel Excelsior makes its debut as the most lavish resort overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Its host, an original 1913 royal villa, presents 158 refurbished guestrooms and suites dressed in timeless, contemporary interiors fit for royalty and celebrity guests alike (seriously, the hotel has welcomed Queen Elizabeth II and Elizabeth Taylor in the past). While strolling through the hotel’s alluring garden, alongside the beach, or simply eating at one of three restaurants, visitors can appreciate views of the Adriatic Sea and Old Town.

Charleston, South Carolina

With pastel Antebellum-style houses lining its cobblestones streets, historic Downtown Charleston, South Carolina exudes Southern charm in every way possible. Often referred to as the Holy City, this seaside city is replete with chic restaurants and bars, influential museums, and luxe hotels at every corner. We could go on, but our Charleston Destination Guide does the talking for us.

Why visit in March? The annual Food & Wine Festival kicks off the first week of the month from March 1-5. Spring temperatures and blooming flowers warm up this Southern seaside town, making it ever-so-charming.
